We Love Foodie Fridays: Favourite Food Trends for Summer
So far, this has pretty much been the summer of food. Not that this is special in any way. Most of my summer, scratch that, most of my life revolves around food. However, this summer I've definitely made it my mission to test out as many new foods and restaurants as possible. Chicks, I think I've become a bit of a foodie!
While I previously did my daily read of beauty and fashion blogs every morning, now I'm all about the food photography. This is all part of being the cultured individual (c'mon, no laughing!). Being a foodie means keeping on top of the food trends. Co-op Shannon and I even went on a little foodie adventure to The Stop's Night Market. It was a foodie's dream. Complete with new, trending dishes and cocktails, we were pretty much in heaven. Bonus: proceeds from our tickets went to charity, so we also got to feel like good people, yay!

Grilled beef short rib with veggie wrap & pork belly green onion enoki roll from Arisu
Housemade all-beef hot dog with sweet and tangy beet relish from Richmond Station
Strawberries and Cream Donut from Tori's Bakeshope
Poached shrimp, spicy mayo & corn on a hand made roll from Drake Hotel
I learned a lot about trending foods at the market and what makes a good dish. So gals, obviously, I am a foodie.
With that in mind, here are 6 of my current faves when it comes to food. Some of these are older faves that I've rediscovered with my new palette and some are trendy dishes that I think we'll all be seeing a lot more of.
#1 SoHot Sauce: I came across this brand a year or two ago at Toronto's Hot & Spicy Festival. The sauces are the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. It's not an intense heat either, it doesn't overpower just adds a great flavour. My personal favourites are the Bareback Berries on brie and a crostini (see, I'm fancy) and the Sweet Surrender on an arugula salad (yeah, I know things).
#2 Cronuts: If you haven't heard of cronuts yet then here's what you need to know: croissants + donuts = cronuts. They're fried, flaky and mouth watering. Unfortunately, there is also a 2 hour line up waiting for you where they originate in New York. I think cronuts will be making their way here anytime now, but until that happens, here's an easy DIY.
#3 Lobster Rolls: I like lobster. I like rolls. I love lobster rolls. Succulent, fresh and juicy! They're also a perfect summer meal because you can use prepared lobster that requires no heat. Here's a recipe.
#4 PC Salted Toffee Cheesecake Lollipops: So cake pops are kind of last year (we're all about the donuts now), but these are CHEESEcake pops and you can eat them when you're utterly lazy. I'm a big fan of convenient products that I can reach for in a pinch. Think of a dinner party where you've forgotten about dessert; tada, bring these babies out to impress.
#5 Sea Beans: First of all, I had never heard of these little guys before so I'm guessing not a lot of you chicks have either. Let me lay it down for you: they're actually in season now and they taste very salty but quite refreshing at the same time. They can be pickled, sautéed or even eaten raw.
#6 BBQ: Here it is: BBQ is the hottest thing since sliced bread. I'm all about the ribs and pork belly lately. I don't know if its a summer fad or here to stay for a while but seriously, BBQ is where it's at.

I recently spent a month in Istanbul Turkey and I fell in love with all the fresh food. Street vendors sell sliced watermelon and pomegranate juice. There are farmers markets each week where you can buy olive oil from the family that grew the olives and pressed them. It was there that I found the recipe for ezme. It is something you can serve as an appetizer, eat with bread, have as a breakfast side dish and even use as a base for a pasta sauce. For the best recipes with killer great photos do an internet search for Ozlem's Turkish Table. Ozlem has a page on Facebook and if you are a foodie the photos alone are worth the search. Each recipe is broken down by photos as well as instructions. I am cooking at least three times a week from her recipes. Delicious. | |
