We Tried It: MiraCurl + Beachy Wave Day and Night Look Tutorial

Anyone else think that curling hair is a MAJOR PAIN? I mean sure, that beachy wave style that only Lauren Conrad seems to be capable of achieving is super cute and adorable. But seriously, is it worth it? I say no. Especially when traditional curling irons are a. hazardous to the clumsy (I would know) and b. better for curling ringlets that a pageant show mom would be proud of than beachy boho waves.

Which is why when Babyliss was all, 'hey, we've developed this super cool robot that basically curls your hair for you and gives you loose waves instead of Little House on the Prairie ringlets', I was all like, 'um, shut up and take my money!!'. They sent over the MiraCurl and let us play around with it for a few days to see what we thought!

First of all, we need to show you just how handy this device is:

We decided to make one of our newest interns, Renee, our guinea pig and we tested out the MiraCurl on her gorgeous locks. Renee has straight and fairly fine hair which made it a lot easier to work with. I tried the MiraCurl on my own hair (thick, curly and always knotted) and it ended up getting stuck and I was terrified I would become this girl.

Pro Tip: The MiraCurl works best with smaller sections of hair and be absolutely sure that you hold the curler until you hear the double beep that means it's finished.

Et voila, beachy waves!

We curled all of Renee's hair and she wasn't fully on board with the MAJHUR curls (although personally, ladies, I'm all big hair, don't care) happening, so we decided to loosen it by simply brushing it through and teasing it gently with our fingers.

We used the MiraCurl on the highest heat setting and held it on each section for 12 seconds. It took a little while longer than we expected to finish the entire head, but if you do your hair on a regular basis (and I mean like do your hair, not like my version of doing my hair which includes a shampooing and a messy, wet bun) then it won't be a stretch for you. For those who emulate my type of morning haircare routine, I would suggest cheating with this curler and loosely curling sections on the top layer for an easy boho style.

One of the reasons why we love the MiraCurl is that it makes going from day to night super simple. For starters, this would make an excellent addition to that 'at work/school' emergency beauty kit. Have a last minute date or dinner invite? Curl a few sections for a bit of extra glam. Or, if you curl in the morning, add a bun or braid for something a little bit extra.

We used the MiraCurl to demo two styles: one quickie morning style and one for a little extra polish at night. In addition to the MiraCurl, we used Goody Bobby Pins, Vidal Sassoon Waves Hairspray (C$4.99), John Frieda Frizz Ease Heat Defeat Protective Styling Spray (US$6.59) and Wella Professionals Create Character Texturizing Spray (US$19.00).

For the day time look, we took a section in the middle of the back of the head and twisted it into a bun, securing with bobby pins. (P.S. are you wearing bobby pins the right way?). Then, we took two sections on either side and twisted them, bringing them to the back again, twisting around the bun and securing with bobby pins.  Cute and takes about 5 minutes, perfect for lazy days or rushed mornings.

Now say that you have a fancy occasion after work and you need to spruce up your look.

On the side, French braid your hair and bring over, just more than halfway at the back of your head. You may want to tie off with an elastic or a bobby pin to keep for the time being.

Pro Tip: All thumbs when it comes to French braiding? Join the club! Try this basic tutorial.

Next, take a section at the side of your head and the end of the French braid and tie in a regular knot. You may want to tie off or clip to keep together. Taking the next two sections below, on either side, do the same thing. Then repeat once more until you have three knots. Now, bring all the ends together in a side ponytail. You can use a clear elastic, but we decided to use a plain black one and cover it by wrapping a strand of hair around it and then tucking it in underneath. Let the curled, ponytail, hang to the side.

I've seen the MiraCurl before, although I think it's quite expensive :( Does a beautiful job on hair though

I really like these looks! I have similar hair structure to Renee and would definitely give it a try.

Nice job!
I saw this used at my hair dresser's back in June. It was so cool to watch her do it. It just happened to be the first time she used it. It took her a few minutes to get the hang of it, but it looked pretty easy to use once she got going.
