Who Will Take Home Oscar in 2011? Our Bold Predictions
The Academy Awards are just around the corner, and everyone is giving their opinion on who will be taking Oscar home with them. (But let's be honest - we'll be spending most of our time dissecting the red carpet fashion.) Based on what we saw from the SAGs and Golden Globes, the speculation feels solid. Here's who we think will take home the big prizes come Oscar night.
Best Picture: "The King's Speech"
Pick: The King's Speech; Possible upset: The Social Network
The King's Speech is our top pick for this year's Oscars, and we'd say the most well crafted film of 2010 overall. The entertaining ensemble cast and delightful history lesson is sure to leave its audience, well, speechless (sorry, we had to).
Best Actor in Leading Role: Colin Firth "The King's Speech"
Pick: Colin Firth (c); Possible upsets: James Franco (l), Jesse Eisenberg (r)
If the SAGs or Golden Globes are any indication (and they generally are), Colin Firth is a gimme pick as this year's leading male, winning the critics' vote and ours.
Best Actress in Leading Role: Natalie Portman "Black Swan"
Pick: Natalie Portman (c); Possible upsets: Michelle Williams (l), Annette Bening (r)
Natalie Portman is brilliant as the prima ballerina struggling to find her edge. Her performance is delicate and enticing, but even adults might find the explicit content a little uncomfortable.
Best Actor in Supporting Role: Christian Bale "The Fighter"
Pick: Christian Bale (c); Possible upsets: Geoffrey Rush (l), Jeremy Renner (r)
Christian Bale, Hollywood chameleon, serves up a gripping performance in “The Fighter”, once again taking his role to the utmost with his physical transformation. By many accounts a shoe-in for this award, we're hoping he's put on a little weight for the red carpet. We prefer his buff 'Dark Knight' physique over the scary skinny he keeps bringing back for his other roles, agreed?
Best Actress in Supporting Role: Hailee Steinfeld "True Grit"
Pick: Hailee Steinfeld (c); Possible upsets: Melissa Leo (l), Helena Bonham-Carter (r)
The Coen Brothers take on a classic Western and remade ‘True Grit’. Breakout star Hailee Steinfeld delivered a beautiful and effortless performance as Mattie Ross. We're expecting big things from this young beauty in the years to come.
Best Director: Darren Aronofsky "Black Swan"
Pick: Black Swan; Possible upset: The Social Network
Darren Aronofsky mixes high art with horror in his direction of this incredibly passionate and intense film. It's just too good, and we cannot wait to see him walk away with top honours.
Best Animated Feature Film: "Toy Story 3"
Toy Story 3 had a stellar approval rating from viewers (99%) and critics (91%) on rottentomatoes.com AND is the only animated film to be nominated for Best Picture as well. We will be shocked if this movie fails to get its due for Best Animated Feature Film.
Best Foreign Film: "Biutiful" Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Mexico)
Biutiful is a devastatingly ‘beautiful’ film of a father and his children. Alejandro Inarritu’s direction is flawless, while Bardem is one of the better actors of our generation with his captivating and emotionally chilling performance. This is an exciting nomination for Spanish Cinema enthusiasts (like myself).
Best Feature Documentary: "Exit Through the Gift Shop" (Bansky and Jaimie D'Cruz)
With a 98% tomato-meter critics' rating, we are delighted by the witty and subversive Exit Through the Gift Shop. Even if you’re not generally into documentaries, this one will keep you entertained - and that's saying a lot.
Who do you predict will bring home some Oscar hardware? Do you agree with our picks?

Alexandra, you did a great job with your picks. You were right on most accounts!
Oscars are this Sunday! I cannot wait to see the runways fashions. I always look forward to seeing what Penelope Cruz, Charlize Theron and Johnny Depp wear (among a few others).

Nope, it's not just you. Christian Bale is smokin'! I never thought I'd think that about a guy with such long hair, but there you go.
I'm going to have to agree with Lauren - I do not think The Social Network is Oscar material. The King's Speech must win and Colin Firth must win or I quit.
@cathy- I still cannot believe that Leo has never won! Every year, I hope for him to be nominated.. and deservingly so.
I'm nervous for Natalie Portman. Black Swan got the Oscar buzz right away, and you know what often happens to early frontrunners. I think the Actor categories are probably a lock but the Actress categories might see some upsets (albeit to some very deserving people, so it wouldn't be so horrible).
I predict the King's Speech is going to be the big winner and wouldn't be surprised if it took home Best Picture. I also predict Inception will be totally overlooked (even though I don't think it should be).
I enjoyed watching The Social Network (I watched it for the second time last weekend), but I am going to be the most upset if it wins an Oscar - it's just not THAT kind of movie. |
