I came across Echo Verde while doing research for the blog, My Domestic Dish, in an attempt to find eco-friendly fabrics that looked great, were more sustainable and were affordable. I'm cognizant of the environmental crisis that we sit upon the precipice of and realize the need for more earth conscious consumerism. That being said, I am also a mother of four, living on a single-income budget and I assume that I am not the only one who sacrifices a bit in the conscience department if it means saving some money.
With Echo Verde, the pricing isn't outrageous but the clothing is.
I had one heck of a time getting photos for this post, as it was simply not my day where the camera was concerned so I do apologize for that. I have not done this incredibly comfortable sweater dress from the Echo Verde fall collection any justice but I'll proudly sport it, all the same. The pieces focus on sensibility and soul, giving warmth to a wardrobe for chilly temperatures.
This is the hooded tunic sweater, in grey mix, and it's comprised of cashmere and organic cotton. Can you get any nicer than that? Their fall collection would make even the most beach-loving mama pine for cooler temperatures and can be seen here. I would probably trade my left arm for their cape with the cowl, or the jersey knit, wide leg pants. More than just the clothing, I fell in love with the story of the company as well. Jane Nemis is the creator, who started the company in 2009 and wears every hat from designer and producer, to merchandiser. She is also incredibly nice, which makes dealing with a smaller operation far more personal and pleasurable than the big brands out there. Echo Verde is based in Vancouver, Canada and the name stems from the business practices and environmental approaches of one link in a chain impacting all of the others. The actions of one "echo" onward. Verde is Italian for green and serves as an homage to Jane's grandmother, who taught her to sew. Leave it to the Canadians to be practical, with a multi-cultural influence, as well as incredibly sweet! I am almost as proud that the company is based here at home as I am to wear the gorgeous clothing, of which I will have another review posted about soon- so stay tuned!
My final thoughts about the attire;
The Echo Verde Hooded Tunic Sweater makes for a simple, yet very classy look for the afternoon. This is the kind of outfit that is effortlessly on point, being super cool, casual and it is definitely one of my fall essentials. It easy morphs from a date night dress when paired with heels into a Mum-at-the-park outfit, when I swap the stilettos out for my high top mocs. It is simply charming and suitable for women of all ages and tastes, on top of being highly practical.

Coming across Muse Clothing Company and their exceptionally comfortable, yet elegant, clothing line was like coming home, eyeing up a well-loved chair and perusing the shelves for a favourite book. The entire collection gives that same sense of visual familiarity due to the overall classic look to every dress; They're ones that would be expected in a wardrobe, yet are not so often found. Each dress has a look that would appeal to any variety of tastes, as they lend themselves to personalisation, while still giving a wardrobe staple for any nearly occasion. They're about as comfortable as that favourite chair too, believe it or not. I'm so tired of wearing something that rides up, is scratchy, that requires the good ol' boob-scoop because of the neckline or where I feel like I've stuffed myself into something that will go "scctch scctch" if I swish around in it. This dress was a pleasure to wear, visually and comfort-wise, and I ended up liking the colour much more than I figured I would when it arrived. I'm typically a basic black kinda gal but their moss dresses have appealed to me lately, after I branched out with the purple.
I truly did have one heck of a time deciding what I would enjoy the most but, luckily, the owner of the company had a couple of suggestions and I was thrilled to get to try out the Leona dress for this review;
I will admit that this style may not be the best cut for me, considering my bust size, but Facebook feedback has told me that I looked pretty good nonetheless.
Due to the bamboo fabric, you can wear this in various temperatures and not have to worry too much about sweating- it's incredibly breathable, was easy to clean and I actually tossed it in the dryer (even though it says to lay it out to dry) without any dire repercussions. Take that, dry clean only dresses!
I found the clingy fabric and the feminine detailing prevented any feeling of being "matronly" while wearing it, even though all of my skin was covered and my hem line came to just above the knee. I absolutely love the colour, as well as the fantastic surprise that I discovered my dress arrived with- a built in bra! That is always a welcome addition to any outfit.
I quickly appreciated the capped, cute sleeves and the coordinating peplum detailing on the front. It's a classic, timeless, Kate-esque piece that would suit a variety of ages and it is the perfect combination of sophisticated and sexy.
I found that the outfit looked nice while paired with a simple, tan pump or kicked up a knotch by a 6 inch stiletto and some killer accessories. It lends itself to a couple of different looks but, I can pretty much guarantee, you will feel confident in whichever you go with while wearing a Muse number.
Check out the website http://museclothingcompany.com/ and be sure to stop by the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/museclothingcompany to peruse the beautiful collection yourself. You'll be hooked.

I am absolutely thrilled to be able to write this review to you today, all about the Cryoow doll, because every one of these adorable pieces is entirely unique and created by your own child and it has been a huge hit in our household. The name stands for "create your own" and the company started all due to the idea of a 7 year old girl, who asked a tailor in her parent's company to make a doll for her from a picture she had drawn. Things took off from there and now Cryoow is devoted to making dolls as unique as snowflakes for children all over the world, each one being personalized and completely special. This was something that appealed greatly to me and, even moreso, to my children, who you can read more about here. I hope you enjoy it too.
When I posed the question to my two boys, ages 7&9;, "If you could make your own doll for your sister, what would it look like?", I never thought it would become such a competition! Thing 1 and Thing 2 started drawing up a storm, wanting to create the best doll for little Peanut, who's 2, and win her affection via doodles of princesses or whatever they thought was most-likely to capture her eye. The boys decided that they would each draw 10 submissions that Peanut could pick from, choosing the winner, and we would have the Cryoow doll creator make up the replica for her in order for me to write this review.
The drawing took up an entire afternoon and, in the end, my oldest ended up being the one to have come up with Peanut's ideal dolly. As you can see from the photos posted, I believe his was chosen by our Frozen-obsessed lady because it looks a lot like Elsa.
We sent off the drawing to Waly from the company, who appears to handle all orders, and had an excellent experience where communication with the company was concerned. Their replies are prompt, courteous and very pleasant- even when I failed to be able to properly scan something. Gah.
I was actually quite surprised at how quickly the doll was made and shipped, which we received notification of and we got to track it all the way from Indonesia. All of the kids grew progressively more excited as it neared Canada. My only disappointment would have been the horrendous cost of the doll, as it runs about $150 USD to purchase, which does include shipping. It's quite expensive for a little, 30cm tall doll but so are the Maple Lea girls or the American Girl dolls and I do enjoy the unique aspect of these ones.
It comes wrapped in this beautiful, blue satchet that has the Cryoow label stitched onto it. When you open it up, the doll is enclosed in a little wrapper and a special identity slip comes with it so you know who made what you are about to open.
When Peanut opened her dolly, I was completely shocked at how well the Cryoow creators had replicated Thing 1's drawing. It was exactly like the picture, right down to the way that he had drawn the snowflakes on her dress and it included the same amount of them on there.
On the back of each doll is a little space where the child that created it can write their name in order to sign their artwork. My son was incredibly proud of himself at that point in time and wrote his name while looking terribly pleased. It was so cute.
My tiny Peanut immediately took to the doll, named her "Pwincess" (so bloody cute) and carries her everywhere. This is fantastic for me, as she previously liked carrying around one of her two pillows and my dogs were always trying to sleep on them whenever she dropped one. There's a shot of The Princess, her Pwincess and those two pillows in the photo uploads.
As a mother, I love the idea that Peanut may have this doll for years to come and may even pass it on to her own children, telling them that their uncle made it for her when she was only two. I've already put the drawing that my son made into a frame and will keep it safe should that day ever arrive.

I recently had the privilege of trying out Glow Bug's updated cloth diaper for review, courtesy of the company, and I have to say that the improved design made a significant difference for me.
Here is my mosquito-bitten, little "Chicky" in her Glow Bug cloth diaper; (see pics)
As you can see, she looks adorable- and the diaper isn't half bad either! Having two tiny ladies in the house, I can never get enough of the beautiful patterns, colours and character prints that Glow Bug offers because they launch a new collection yearly. However, as I will teach my daughters; Appearances matter less than what is on the inside.
The pictured gusset is what really counts for me.
Now, although it is not exactly new, I had not previously known about the 360° gusset because it was a design change put in the year after my oldest daughter was born. Being a cloth user, I rarely need to replace my diapers (huzzah!) and was basically living under a frugal rock when it came to what was new on the market. Great for my purse strings, not so awesome for convenience because I used to deal with leaks. It happens. It also happens with disposables, only landfills and baby skin also deal with the repercussions of soiled diapers in that case. (Did you know that it can take 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose?! Google it!) Since peaking out from my hidey hole, I have come across some really fantastic changes to the cloth diaper scene and this gusset is one of them. All mess is contained within the little enclosure and it makes clean up far easier.
Glow Bug offers what you call a "pocket" version, with microfibre inserts, and they are one of the cheapest cloth diapers that you can purchase. This does not mean that you suffer where quality is concerned, as they go above and beyond many competitors with waterproof flaps in the front and back to help prevent leaks, on top of the gusset and the snap in inserts-so things stay put.
What else do you need to know, do you wonder?
There are many, snaps on the diaper and this sizing capability means that your baby uses the same diaper from birth through to 35 pounds. Translation = even more money saved.
Chicky and Peanut, for example, can both wear this and there is nearly a year and a half age difference between them. Of course, Peanut's potty-trained and has been for quite a while now so that worry is not on my list. If it was, however, that fact would be awesome!
Now, the diaper was poofed out a bit more in the photos than they typically sit on her because Chicky shoved it down a bit. She had been a bit high-strung today due to her need to dance...and nobody puts baby in a corner! She is dancing up a storm and quite pleased in her Glow Bug cloth diaper. I most definitely recommend them for the beautiful craftsmanship, the fun patterns, the handy gusset and the money-saving size options.

I have talked before about Matcha and I keep bringing it up, I suppose because I love the stuff. I am a weirdo, however, and enjoy things like brussel sprouts, broccoli, spinach and kale. I like the earthly, leafy flavours and was probably a rabbit in a past life.
Most people do not feel the same way about veggies and I am seeing an increasing trend among friends, or their children, who are steering away from greens. Now, that is a completely different blog post in itself and I hate that idea, but nonetheless I may be alone in enjoying the matcha flavour. I know that is the case in our household, as I have introduced my husband to it and he nearly gagged when trying to drink the tea previously- and he's one who will eat greens without fuss! He tried it as a result of the energy boost provided though and that benefit alone outweighs the taste for him. Dr. Oz recently did a show that featured a segment on matcha, which you can view here, and discusses the fantastic health benefits of using this product.
With the Kiss Me Organics Matcha, you're receiving something that is USDA certified organic and they test their leaves in the lab to make certain that their tea is of the highest quality. This is important to me because it means that pesticides, chemical-laden fertilizers and herbicides have not been used on the plants, on top of the company taking steps to make certain that the tea was not exposed to unsafe toxins as a result of the geographical location.
With matcha tea you're getting about 30mg of caffeine per cup, an excellent source of amino acids, 1/2 tsp is equal to 8-10 cups of regular tea where antioxidants are concerned and it improves focus, as well as memory. Very important point here for any other Mamas on the reader list; it also blocks fat from entering your cells! Oh yeah baby! I wouldn't care if it tasted like gym socks, which thankfully it does not, I would be drinking it daily. In all seriousness though, for me personally, I enjoy the calming ceremony of whisking matcha green tea and sipping from my ceremonial bowl. I'm a nerd, I know. This particular brand is not one that I would drink directly like that, however, as it tastes a bit muddy to me and I do not find it to be of the same vibrant, gorgeous green colour that DoMatcha was. The straight drink is not something I would recommend for this one but it works out alright as I do not always have time for that anways. I simply wish to include it in my diet, regardless of the rush that I am in. For that purpose, or so that my husband can enjoy the benefits without the flavour that he does not enjoy, we make a matcha smoothie. The value provided from Kiss Me Organics is excellent for the smoothies, as you can still gain the benefits from green tea powder but don't have to spend an arm and a leg to include it in a wide variety of recipes.
In a smoothie, you can include nearly anything you would like, with any mix you so choose. I typically add in organic soy or almond milk, a tsp of matcha, some frozen berries, 1/3 of a cup of North Coast Naturals fibre and half of a banana. I say only half because my one year old daughter eats the other and I toss the remaining end in to use it up. See photos for the resulting, delicious drink.
With Kiss Me Organics, you can find a multitude of uses for the matcha green tea powder with their recipe booklet, like matcha rice or lattes, and the product itself is of Certified Organic quality. It's absolutely delicious in a smoothie and, if the mood suits, I add in some coconut oil for the additional health benefits. I make sure to use my Still Eagle straw (which you can read about on my blog www.mydomesticdish) and am good to go for the day!
How do you fit healthy choices into your busy lifestyle?

Hey guys!
You're all going to meet my "Chicky" today! This little model here is going to show you the Piddly Winx cloth diaper, with the overnight bamboo, hybrid soaker- and she's a cutiepie!
Now, all Mama bias aside, I know she is adorable. If you think she's utterly squeezable at this point, you should see her when she's actually happy and being a ham for the camera! On this particular day, however, she kept turning to me, modelling the diaper like a pro, turning away and crying sadly over being used for her good looks. Woes of women, everywhere- you tell it, sister!
She really did turn away and cry for a second in between turning back and showing off. I think it was because I giggled over how big her bum looks in this adorable "diapey", as my toddler calls them, that I was sent to review. Again, the woes of women everywhere. The bodacious booty choir sings in my area, definitely, only I do not have overnight padding to use as my excuse.
Now that Chickie is striking a pose again, look at her bitty bum (sorry sweetheart, these photos will be used at your wedding).
This diaper is from the Piddly Winx collection, which I believe is an excellent company for first-time cloth users. Within your order, you will get a complete list of instructions, as all cloth needs to be prepped before first use. Basically, you soak your inserts until they prove absorbent, soak the cover in a vinegar and water combo to prevent colour bleed and then you wash all of them in your regular laundry cycle. The instructions provided give you a breakdown of steps, as well as reasoning behind them, and then a couple of tidbits of useful knowledge on top. If you are just starting out, it can be a very daunting pool to jump into and I believe the included paperwork would be very helpful.
That fun monkey pattern can be found on the Piddy Winx website here and comes with a variety of insert options. The little "Pink Monkey Love" diaper will run you $13 with the standard, 3 layer soaker and I find that competitively priced where other cloth diaper creators are concerned. An excellent perk to ordering with Piddly Winx would be their willingness to "give back", so to speak. On the website, to quote directly, they have an appreciation package for anyone who chooses to refer a customer to their site;
"SO, HOW DOES IT WORK?
Tell your friend to mention your first and last name when ordering (ask them place a note on Paypal if it is an online order, or send us an email). Once the order is placed, we will send you an email, letting you know that one of your friends placed an order. You can choose one of the following rewards options:
1) 5% cash-back, payable by either cheque or Paypal.
2) 10% of your friend’s purchase in the form of a giftcard towards any Piddly-Winx product or bundle package."
I though that was fantastic! Considering how many mothers share word-of-mouth advice with others (I cloth diaper directly as a result of another mother's crash course on the subject), this could lead to serious savings for some ladies! If you order, be sure to give a shout out to yours truly please ;)
As you can see from the photos, it fits just the same as any other diaper (cloth or disposable) but it adjusts to accommodate any weight from 6-35lbs. This means that my baby girl will be able to sport the monkeys for longer, at one third of the cost each change in comparison to the store bought brands. Hello savings!
Now, I've tried the polyester diaper and the bigger insert that you see in the photos is a bamboo and cotton combo. What I appreciate about Piddly Winx is their variety where patterns, colours and soaker options were concerned. They offer pocket diapers and this means that you stuff the insert inside the diaper itself, as well as unstuff at wash time. This also means that you can double up on inserts but I think the overnight soaker is the way to go! I had NO leaks whatsoever, after hours and hours of wear, and I can not say the same for every other day this week. This little peanut is a big eater and, subsequently, a big leaker more often than not so I typically have to add in extra inserts or face the damp consequences. The soaker within this diaper is the Piddly Winx 5 layer overnight, which includes a blend of 40% microfibre and 60% bamboo- and I highly recommend it.
For any of my readers, Angela from Piddly Winx has created the coupon code DOMDISHFAM5, valid until Dec 31, 2014! It will give anyone an additional 5% off any order and all products, including gift cards and bundles! There is an existing coupon code PWSUMMER14 and that takes 10% off of non-bundles until June 30th so you have some options and choices. Obviously, if you are a bundle buyer or just want a gift card then the Domestic Dish coupon works out better.
Have a great diapering day Mamas!

When you think of organic products, you think wholesome, peaceful, flowery and you probably do not have imagery pop into your head that involves a skull and crossbones. Today's post may change that!
I was sent a package of Death Wish coffee to review, along with a magnet and sticker- which my husband has stolen for his toolbox at work, and the first thought that popped into my head about this packaging was "Badass!" (pardon the language but I detail it in the interest of honesty). This coffee can not be found in stores, is touted as the strongest available in the world and offers at least twice the caffeine as your average cup of joe. Again, I'll repeat; badass!
Just like anyone else who suffers from curiousity-killed-the-cat syndrome, I had to immediately make it the very second I got it out of the box. The packaging calls for 2 1/2tbsps of coffee per 6 oz of water, which I was pretty nervous about from the start because I thought it would taste like burnt beans and tar. As I scooped the coffee into the filter, I thought of Frankenstein's monster and tentatively considered what would happen once I turned on the pot via flick of the switch.
BEHOLD! IT'S ALIIIIVE!!!
I drank it. It was absolutely delicious! I was shocked.
Then I drank some more.
I tried this coffee both black and with cream and sugar, being incredibly impressed by the taste with each cup. There is zero burnt flavor whatsoever caused by their roasting process and I will say without the least bit of hesitation that it is far, far superior to the packaged Starbucks or Tim Hortons roasts.
My husband, who is a caffeine addict, will regularly fight me on the need to purchase coffee on his way to work, rather than make it at home, "because it just doesn't taste as good". He loves this brew, says it has to be the fact that Death Wish is made with Robusta beans and not Arabica (which is what is typically found in commercial brands or coffee shops) and he has not purchased coffee elsewhere since we have had this in the house. Even doing the breakdown at their $20/bag, this will save us money every day.
It has a smooth taste, with a bit of a spicy warmth as the finish and leaves no lingering flavour that causes one to just know they have coffee breath. I am sure I would with this one as well but am not left with that taste in my mouth.
Each cup contains approximately 660mg of caffeine per 12oz but I did not find myself jittery or "buzzing" after two large ones. That being said, I used to work in a coffee shop and have built up such a tolerance that I can easily drink two pots of coffee a day without breaking into a (literal) sweat. My father, however, took a standard sized mug to go while visiting and called me later on that evening to let me know it gave him a serious case of the shakes. Be warned.
In their FAQ section of the site, I found a bit of information that I really appreciated as a consumer and it may interest you as well. To quote;
"Our coffee is roasted as close to the order date as possible. We do keep an overstock, but typically it is gone through in three days. Shipping through USPS priority mail is 2-3 days to most places. This pushes time from roast to delivery at 3-6 days. We take a lot of pride in that." I found that impressive and uncommon.
More than just flavour, freshness and a serious energy jolt, Death Wish offers a 100% money back guarantee to make certain you are satisfied with the experience.
I most definitely was.

No, no, the title isn't because I've gone crazy- That's the name of the wine I'm currently drinking, Frisky Zebras, and I have to say it's a pretty excellent buy!
I was initially attracted to the colourful label, the silly name and the various stickers exclaiming it's eco-friendly approach and Free Trade practices. The makers of Frisky Zebras, an enterprise called United Nations of Wine, is a certified "CarbonNeutral" company so they give back more than what they take from the earth. Being decorated in these types of disclaimers and bedecked with stickers regarding awards, I was definitely intrigued. After these types of investments have been made by the business, I figured their Seductive Shiraz was going to be an expensive experiment but what really sold me on their brand was the price point; $8.75! I actually checked the fine print on the LCBO price tag, to compare and make certain that I was holding the bottle to match, but that's the actual cost. Needless to say, I excitedly headed straight for the cash with the Shiraz in hand and then high-tailed it out of there like I stole something!
After tucking my children in (for the billionth time) this evening and pouring myself a glass, I discovered fruity notes on the nose, coupled with coffee and an an anise-like aroma. Loving black licorice, lattes and wine, it was quite like having a glass of all of my favourite things and I was a regular Julie Andrews for a minute, going all Sound of Music soundtrack over this and the prospect of no children being awake for the next three hours. That also happens to be one of my favourite things.
I was definitely correct with the fruity aspect, as the wine tastes of cherries and plums, then a chocolatey sweetness that's amped a bit with a slight pepper. It's a medium-bodied red, which you might think wouldn't be the case due to it's 14% alcohol content, with a smooth finish that's not too long but not short enough to disappoint a gal either!
I would recommend this for anyone who prefers a sweeter wine, without prominent and lingering tannins.
If you end up trying the wine and dislike it, please be sure to check out the rest of their line and see if there may be something that peaks your interest. This company does charity work, as well as being eco-friendly and worth spending your money on. If you're going to enjoy wine, you may as well save the planet while you're gripping and sipping.
If you like it, great! I have introduced you to something frisky and enjoyable that isn't my husband. Some days, I would happily trade one for the other ;)
Cheers!

I recently discovered Nature's Path Qi'a (pronounced Kee-ah, which the packing lets you know) on my hunt for healthier alternatives to the garbage foods on today's grocery store shelves. There are only so many times I can feed my children oatmeal or flax before they're going to revolt! I have now found a kid-friendly cereal that's fantastic for families on the go.
Depending on where you're shopping, you'll pay anywhere between $10-15/bag and that seems incredibly steep until you check out the serving size. It's actually fairly reasonable, especially when you consider that Qi'a is a non-GMO product, it's organic, you get 4g of fibre and 6g of protein, plus Omega 3s in each serving! This is also an excellent company to check out if you have taken the gluten-free plunge.
Qi'a is a delicious, interesting meal with loads of texture and flavour. It's made with chia, hemp and buckwheat, then a variety of additions based upon your selection. I was eating the apple cinnamon kind, which has little bits of squishy apples in it and bursts of raisin flavour. I found that to be the dominate taste, moreso than any seediness or earthy notes. The little seeds are a pleasant crunch in your teeth and you only need two tablespoons to cover a serving amount! This has proven excellent for me, as I loathe breakfast but need the energy boost. I think so many mothers are in the same position. It's also great for my wee ones, as early morning meals can prove such a struggle before school and this takes care of that, while still ensuring my children have something healthy in their bellies.
You can combine the cereal with milk, or a milk substitute, and the packaging says to wait a few minutes for the seeds to expand. I, however, put it into yogurt and just eat it straight away. I should also think that coconut water would be a great mix, if you wish to go that route. This was something I was able to feed my toddler, my preteen and my husband while also enjoying myself. Now THAT is something unusual.
All in all, an excellent product and I will keep you posted on any further reviews of Nature's Path foods but, in the meantime, you can check out their website here; Nature's Path and their Facebook here; https://www.facebook.com/naturespath
Enjoy!
