I have a story that speaks to the quality of character of the staff/owners at Yellow Cup Cafe.
I didn't know how to thank them for what they have done, but I thought sharing the story would be the beginning of showing my gratitude.
Remembrance Day. Lunch with a friend from work at Yellow Cup Cafe. My first time there. The place is busy.
We are lucky and find a table. We eat, we chat, and soon we realize we are late for work. Wow, that went by fast. Quick, grab our stuff and head back to the office.
Phew, no one seems to notice that our lunch ran a bit over. Get started on my project again. I'm immersed. My phone vibrates with a message. It's Visa. I ignore it. Then my husband calls me. "Did you spend 1200 dollars at Winners during your lunch?", pause, "No". I go to check for my wallet, it's gone. Shit.
I call to cancel my cards, it's hard, Remembrance day is a bank holiday. More time for this guy to spend money, shoot. He obviously did some planning.
I call the cafe, maybe they ditched my wallet once they took the cash and cards. No such luck I'm told, after the woman on the phone checks the lost and found. Barbara: "Oh but I can check the security camera", Me: "You have a security camera?!" Her: "Oh yes of course we do. Now tell me what you are wearing, sitting, and the time." I go on to describe in detail. I do not have hope, 1. of her really taking the time to review the footage and 2. that she will see anything in that video of a busy cafe. She doesn't call back. I'm not surprised.
I get into the office in the morning, I've cancelled cards, ordered new documents from service ontario, called for replacements of my membership cards, filed police reports both criminal and fraud, there is a laundry list.
Then I get a call, it's Barbara, "I see them clear as day, a man a woman they take your wallet out of your purse!" She goes on excitedly about the criminals appearance, actions, and attempt on another woman. I can't believe it. We've got them. We are both excited. "I'll get my guy to make a copy" says Barbara. Wow, instead of shunning me for have a negative experience at her cafe, she has embraced it and provided me evidence for police to catch this couple. Amazing.
The details that follow are not that exciting, my back and forth with the police and credit card company. Documenting all stores, times, and locations of their spending spree. If and when caught, I want them to be charged with everything they did.
Barbara calls the following morning, the tape is ready. Awesome, thanks Barbara. I hang up thinking, wow, how can I ever thank her.
What Barbara did, she didn't have to do. A lot of people would not. I'm a good person and I think people are good, and I still didn't expect Barbara to do it. But she did it.
Out of a very nasty act, came a very kind act. And for that I will be forever grateful to her and the Yellow Cup Cafe.
Now let's catch those wallet thieves!
