Just having moved to Windsor, Ontario I am at a loss for where to get the best products. Out of frustration on a van out of gas, nice day for a walk and not wanting to really shop with my kids, I bit the bullet and looked up my closest local grocery store. I am Italian by way of my mother so cooking Italian is in my blood.
I grabbed my re-usable shopping bags, put shoes on the two and four year old and started the walk down a few blocks on Erie St. The heat and sun were getting to my two year old and by the time I arrived at La Stella Supermarket I was flustered. My two year old began her regular tantrum when I put her in the cart and I started down the aisles. WOW! Selections of cheese I have not found elsewhere even in Toronto, butcher counter with amazing staff (all family), fantastic prices, every pasta you could ever want and even more that you never heard of and want to try.
In the process of exploring and my two year old tantruming an employee came up and began to talk to the girls. She mentioned that they deliver orders of over $100 are free. She then went above and beyond and asked to give the kids each a kinder egg so that I could shop with sanity. Now that is customer service!
They offer an entire aisle devoted to vinegars, a huge selection of expresso and speciality coffees at unbelievable prices!
I stopped at the butcher counter and ordered some ground pork, ground beef and their made daily home made Rapini Italian sausage. The sausage by the way was on for $1.99 a lb. (I know amazing). The butcher then suggested I try their steak kabobs which were $.75 a piece. I purchased four of those and then checked out. I bought 4L milk, brown sugar, 3 separate pounds of meat products, anchovies, coffee and pasta and my total was $21.34. Once again amazing!
If you are ever in Windsor I highly recommend you look up and explore this place. I should add a side note that my daughter dropped a piece of chocolate and when I got close to the floor to get it I noticed that the floor was remarkably clean. I mean clean clean. You could have ate off of it.
