I am a fan of Ethical Bean coffee. I buy it ground, and use it pretty much exclusively for cold brewing because I prefer iced coffee to hot coffee. I'm not much for hot beverages in general. If you don't know about cold brewing and you like iced coffee, you should give this a try: (1) in a French press, combine two tablespoons of ground coffee with about a cup of water, stir and refrigerate overnight; (2) when you're ready to serve, fill the French press to the top line with cold water and stir, then press the coffee; (3) serve over ice, with or without milk/soy milk/flavoured almond milk (my fave is unsweetened vanilla). -

For a Vancouver salon, this place is unpretentious and affordable. I have curly hair and every haircut is a bit of an adventure for me. The stylist I saw (Lucas) listened to me and did a competent job of cutting my hair. He didn't try to convince me I needed layers or anything, so that was refreshing. -

This cream is meant as a hair treatment, but I use it as a styling aid. If I want to smooth my hair when I put it in a ponytail or bun, I apply it in the way you might use a pomade or mousse. I take a handful and smooth it through my hair from the roots up to where I gather it to put it up. It makes my hair soft and also holds it in place. I don't love the smell of this product (it's a wee bit medicinal), but I love the texture and the results. -

This is a hair treatment with rosemary and avocado oils. You're meant to apply it ten minutes or so before washing hair, but I have quite thick, curly hair, so once a week(ish) I pull it through the ends of my hair and put it up in a bun before bed. After I wash it the next day, I can really feel the added softness and conditioning. It has a pleasant smell. Keep it away from the scalp/hairline, as it can tingle a little. -

How have I gone so long without knowing about this stuff? It's great! I've been wearing it during the day just on its own and it's amazing, and then for an evening look I can layer on some eyeshadow and it really holds. I have fair skin and blue eyes, so the "Sin" shade looks pretty and champagne-coloured on me. If you have a darker complexion it might match your skin tone a bit more. It has a subtle shimmer, and it doesn't cake, crease, or come off all day. Love this product. It's kind of pricey, but a little goes a long way. -

Picked this up before a trip so that I could ensure the polish on my toes stood up the whole time I was away. Glitter polish has a lot more staying power than ordinary nail polish. I got it in the shade "Shimmering Sunset," which has a pretty bright pink polish (step 1) and an orange-flecked glittery topcoat (step 2). The packaging is nice, and I really like the colour for summer. I'll definitely use it again for hot weather getaways, because it stayed put and looked fresh for my whole trip. -

This is the coolest invention ever. I learned about it on America's Test Kitchen on PBS. It's basically a crank that fits through a peanut butter jar-shaped lid with a gasket in it. You put the crank through the lid and the gasket, screw the lid onto a jar of natural peanut butter, and crank several times until the peanut butter and oil are mixed together. No oil spillage, no waste, no mess. The best part is when you draw the crank out through the lid, it comes out completely clean! There's a teeny bit of oil left on the gasket, so you just wash everything with dish soap and it's ready for the next time. Totally recommend this if you eat natural peanut butter or other nut butters that don't have stabilizers like hydrogenated oils to keep them together. -

Got a free sample of Crest Whitestrips and finally tried them this evening. I couldn't stand the way it felt on my bottom teeth and took that one off after half an hour. I've had the top one on for an hour and a half and can't wait to take it off in half an hour. Do people really wear these for two hours a day? I find the peroxide is making my tongue a little numb. I definitely won't be buying these. Have my doubts over their effectiveness in any case. Thankfully I have fairly white teeth naturally, and see a dentist every six months for a good cleaning. -

I wanted to like this product, because I love the satsuma fragrance. Received it as a birthday gift so I don't have a receipt or I would return it. It smells nice and looks pretty when you squeeze it out of the bottle, but when applied it sort of flakes and has an unpleasant almost curdled texture. -

I've been using Murad products for many years, and I was thrilled when they started making a day moisturizer that is mattifying and has some SPF. I live in Vancouver, so for much of the year this, combined with makeup, has enough SPF for me. In the summer/when I'm going to be outdoors a lot I also use a real sunscreen with SPF at least 30. Anyway, this stuff is great. It has a nice smooth texture, keeps my skin matte, and helps makeup to stay put. -
