I really wanted to like this product. The reviews suggest this is THE product for oily skin, Two hours after I apply an base products I shine like a lighthouse on a new moon night - primer, no primer, powder, no powder, setting spray, no setting spray. You name it I've tried the combinations.
I've tried EL double wear foundation for a full year now - through our dry winters and humid summers. The product has more coverage than I am comfortable with. I prefer a sheer to medium coverage product - I want my skin to look like my skin. But after 35 years of wearing make up I've learnt to sheer products out by using a small amount and buffing that small amount over my face, or diluting it with my sunscreen or moisturiser.
Why I like it? The product goes on and looks beautiful, and if I use a pea size amount and buff it into my skin, then a little goes a very long way - resulting in my skin only better. It doesn't transfer onto clothes so I can wear white with confidence. It doesn't oxidise nor break down when my oils come through.
Why I dislike it? I am oily after 3-4 hours of applying this foundation. Not just a little bit - but full on lighthouse beaming oily - irrespective of the season, and irrespective if I use sparingly (preferred) or generously (i.e. a medium to full coverage look). Blotting keeps the oils under control, but this needs to be done every hour after the oils come through - so after a full year of trying different ways and combinations of using the product - I've abandoned it. I now use it exclusively if I'm going somewhere in the evening and I don't need my foundation to last too long. Its a good product - but its not the amazing perfection for oily skin that it is touted to be.

Sunscreen is something that causes me alot of anxiety. When I find a product I love, the next time I come to buy it I find its discontinued. For years I used various versions of Soltan dry touch / mattifying SPF50, UVA 5* ultra. I would fly to the UK just to stock up. I wouldn’t compromise on the SPF nor the UVA protection. It wasn’t great under makeup, but I value sunscreen more than makeup. Then they changed the formula.
I tried numerous products but all left me looking shiny and ill with a white cast oil slick. Then I came across LRP Shaka fluid, SPF 50 with PPD60+. Bonus fact - I could buy it here in South Africa. Its now my most preferred sunscreen.
Why I like it? Zero white cast. Full protection - I neither burn nor tan with the product. Time will tell if the UVA rating is accurate. Its lightweight and quickly absorbs into my skin, making getting ready in the morning quick and easy.
Why I dislike it? It is very runny, so becareful when pouring it out into your palm. Its excellent under makeup in the winter here when the air is dry; but in the summer when its humid it makes me shine after an hour. So I don’t wear makeup on top of this in the summer. If i really want to wear make up, then I use the Nivea mattifying facial sunscreen spf 50 for oily skin; but because I don’t know Its UVA rating, I’m cautious about using the Nivea as my only sunscreen. So LRP Shaka is my go to everyday.

This was a firm favorite at home growing up. However its thick creamy and greasy texture put me off growing up with very oily skin. When I moved to Johannesburg, aged 30, I had bought but almost never used moisturizer. But the dry winters here caused havoc with my skin. For the fist time I experienced dry skin and started to use moisturizer. I love skincare products, and I’m not shy to spend some money on a good product. I cycled from generic aqueous cream to high end La Prairie. On a whim, perhaps I was feeling nostalgic that day, i bought a tin of Nivea Creme. That was 8 years ago. Its now the only thing I buy and use every night on my face regardless of season and my skin’s level of oiliness. I have dry skin in winter and very oily in summer.
Why I like it? It moisturizes my skin and keeps it well hydrated. I wake up to soft supple skin. It has reduced the level of oiliness in my skin during the summer. I suspect my summer oily skin was due to my skin trying desperately not to dehydrate! The occlusive nature of the Creme means that doesn’t happen now and so my skin produces less oil. When i forget to use the product my oiliness comes back! It also comes in aluminum tins which are fully recyclable and better for the environment.
What i dislike? i really wish Nivea made exactly the same product only fragrance free. I don’t mind the smell but as I have mildly sensitive skin it would be more reassuring to use without the fragrance.
