I recently read this before watching the film (which was a pretty good interpretation). This is a story about loss & recovery, and a super-genius 9 year old inventor ;) I found part of this book difficult to get through, and had to put it down a few times before I finished. The main character has little idiosyncrasies that you need to try to understand throughout the book, but is well written for the most part considering it's from the POV of a 9 year old. I wasn't a huge fan of the subplot, but I think I would definitely go back and read this again after having seen the movie. You just can't not love little Oskar. -

I love the brain - its intricacies, inner-workings, everything about it. Someone recommended this book to me knowing how much I love the brain - and this book did not disappoint. I would say I couldn't put it down, but part way through the book I had to. I was so heartbroken and frustrated. I managed to pick up the book again and have since mourned its ending. Susan Cahalan is an incredible writer. This book did not disappoint. -

I found that a lot of what was in this book helped melt some subconscious resentment. Even with a degree in psychology and a keen interest in the brain and it's functions, when it came to relationships, I found it difficult to deal with some of my boyfriend's ADHD tendencies. What was the most wonderful was reading other people's experiences and scenarios in the book - adult ADHD is pretty rare and it was nice to know we are not alone. I thought we were both pretty aware of ourselves before reading this book, but it helped (especially myself) take a better look at what I was doing and what I could do to be more supportive. -

I read this book twice. Once, when I was a little younger when it first came out, and again about a year and a half ago - while on a long international flight with coworkers. Nearing the end of our overnight flight, I was nearing the end of the book - and trying not to humiliate myself too much by getting incredibly emotional - but come on, you can't help it! The book was so sweet, not overly cheesy like many YA novels. I will likely read again and again. -

I won't lie, though this book came before Gone Girl, the hype around Gone Girl made it so that I read that one first....and then not long after I opened up Dark Places. I don't read a lot of fiction, and I really don't read a lot of mystery. I'm not sure what it is about Gillian Flynn, but she has such a knack for capturing her audience. This book kept me captivated and I could not put it down!! Movie to be released later this year too ;) I am hoping it will stay true to the book. -

Just something I always like to do to compare the film adaptation. I think I finished this book in 2 days. The storyline was incredible. I have since read other books of hers - she is just a fabulous writer! -

This scent definitely stays, though I wish it wouldn't. I wear this heavy scent usually in the winter, but it isn't my favourite. I find it kind of strong.

If this doesn't scream "summer!" then I don't know what does. This is my vacation scent - not too floral, but nice and light with great staying power - which is incredible considering this was an impulse purchase for me. I can definitely smell notes of the cedar and driftwood (as noted in listed scents) which makes me feel super beachy when spending time on our oceanfront :) -
