Once upon a time, in the land before the husband and children, I worked at The Bay. We sold some pretty high end foods, including kitchen knives. We received all kinds of training to teach us about the fiber points of these knives and justify their $100+ price point.
While I don't know that I will ever be in the market for those knives, I do know what to look for in a kitchen knife. Now that I find myself stocking our basement kitchen with tools, I am keeping an eye out for good value. These Vida knives by @padernokitchenware , found at @canadiantire absolutely fit the bill.
I will be the first to admit that white handles would not be my first choice. It will be a while before I can confidently judge how they hold up.
I can tell you they are solid and a reasonable weight. They have a full tang - meaning the metal from the blade travels all the way through the handle - and are well balanced. The knife block itself is nicely finished a lot of cheaper blocks tend to splinter or are unfinished. Best of all, you won't have to remortgage to afford the whole set

My son (10) has recently fallen in love with Tech Deck This could not have come at a better time. Until now, he had only had the pre-assembled ones to play with. He immediately began assembling these and has been finding new things to jump and flip over for hours. He was able to assemble them entirely himself and best of all - no batteries or electricity required. The tiny screws and wheels do mean you need to be careful around very young children and pets. Including extra screws in the packaging is a huge lifesaver, since they can easily become lost on the floor. -
