This book was a satisfying end to the series. The first time I read this as a teen it was a bit disappointing (or upsetting, rather), but I didn't understand as much back then. Now that I understand things better, it was a great ending.

I liked Mogget's final involvement and reward - he is my favourite character of the entire series, and I was glad for what happened. Seeing Nicholas' decline, was sometimes gripping as I wondered what would happen to him up until the very end, and it was satisfying seeing Sameth and Lirael accept their positions at the end.

I didn't like how the book switched to Sabriel and Touchstone's viewpoints as I feel like it didn't add very much to the story, and I wish that Sameth was able to react to a certain couple of deaths a lot sooner - that would have made for a bit more interesting story (and it was what I expected to happen), but I guess the scope of the story wouldn't have allowed for angst to get in the way of the journey.

While not as good as the previous two books (and only slightly so), this was a good end to the series. The build up was a bit slow and not as grand as the ending deserved, but it was a great ending despite that and despite how sad it was; it wrapped up everything nicely and it felt like it should have ended that way.
