Alanna the First Adventure is the first in the Song of the Lioness Quartet. The series follows a girl as she disguises herself as a boy to become a night. It's teen fiction, but whatever, I love them. My copies of these books are as creased and stained as my Harry Potter books, the signs of love and care, and how many times I've reread them. Just like HP, I was reluctant to read them and then was hooked on the series. It has everything you could ask for in a book, a love story, war, family, and a plot to murder the king.
