Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris Reviews
#956 in Books

Description

Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life-and one of her coworkers checks out....
Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea.
A fun, fast, funny, and wonderfully intriguing blend of vampire and mystery that's hard to put down, and should not be missed.

This book is such easy reading and Charmaine Harris is a good writer. I read this book in an hour as I could not put it down. The books are way better than the TV series which was made for an adult audience. This book as well as the others are made for teenage reading but I as a mature adult feel in love with this book and the rest of the series of novels. I was addicted to the TV series and was sad to see it end.

If you're a fan of True Blood, the best gift you could give yourself is the books. This is the first one in the series and how the books and show differ mainly is that the books are told in Sookie's voice. She's very funny and clever and very entertaining.

In case you aren't familiar here's the scoop: The main character is Sookie, who lives with her grandmother, Adele. Sookie is a telepath, and can read others minds, making it hard for her to date and regarded as the town weirdo. Sookie is a bar maid at Merlotte's and one night Bill walks in and it's love at first site. The catch? Bill's a vampire. In this world vampires have recently "come out of the closet" and are trying to live normal lives. Instead of drinking human blood they drink synthetic blood, making them, theoretically at least, no longer a threat to humans.

Several murders occur in Bon Temps where they live, and Bill becomes a suspect because many of the bodies have fang marks. Sookie's brother Jason is romantically linked to two of the victims, and he is arrested. Wanting to help her brother, Sookie asks Bill to take her to a vampire bar called Fangtasia, which is owned by Eric Northman, a vampire much older and more powerful than Bill.

The book is concerned with Sookie trying to clear her brother of the murders, and she also gets caught up in Eric's problems at the bar. Her and Bill's relationship progresses (the books are a bit graphic!) and it's a fun mystery-style story.
