    Works well on dense undercoats

I have three cats, but one has a particularly problematic coat. He has a very thick, dense undercoat, even though he doesn’t look very fluffy and is short-haired. As a result of this and his recent struggles with his weight (after an expensive and scary pet surgery), he often mats up underneath, no matter how often we brush him.

The Furminator Grooming Rake is better than average at dealing with this problem. I can tell it’s designed more fur undercoats as it seems to pull out a lot of that thick undercoat, helping to prevent future mats. The only thing I dislike is that I feel like it sometimes catches on the current beginning mats and tugs his skin a bit. But that is honestly the case with every brush I’ve tried so far.

I feel like it’s a good start at tackling the problem and will work well over time, but even in the short term, I’m seeing less matts.

It also works well on my second cat, who has a fine, yet wiry coat and apparently had some undercoat, because it gets a ton on her too. The only cat it doesn’t do super well on is my long-haired cat and this is because, contrary to many long-haired breeds, he has very little undercoat and only a fine wispy topcoat. This is common in Birman (his breed) cats, so I don’t blame the brush for that. It’s really more suited to undercoats and dense coats (as described).

The handle is also extremely comfortable and easy to grip and doesn’t exacerbate my joint pain in my fingers.

I can definitely recommend this for dense coated cats (and presumably dogs too!)
