Water
From my childhood memories I don't remember the soup being mainly water. The recipe has changed a lot, as with everything the price is gone up but why pay for mostly water?
I've had to use cornstarch to thicken the soup to make it a bit better.
Certainly the quality is not the same.
What the hell?
This is NOT the Habitant pea soup I grew up with all the way to pre pandemic.
Just pre pandemic I use to get it all the time on sale for .99 cents a can. Then inflation kicked in and the cans skyrocketed all the way to $3.99 a can, however, last week it was on sale at $1.99.
I thought why not, that was the regular price not on sale pre pandemic. I thought I was getting a good deal considering inflation and I sure missed my Habitant pea soup.
I opened the can, saw all that water floating on top and immediately thought, "what the hell?" I stirred it, still water. What happened to all the peas? Taste like crap.
No flavour. Pure swill. Shame on you.
Now more than 50% water
I used to like this soup, but not anymore, although it still taste good, it's mostly water, so I feel ripped off, as this makes for some expensive water
I will never buy it again
They've ruined it!
I've loved this soup for years - until now. I realized I hadn't had it a while and I bought a couple of cans to take camping. When I opened it, it was water swill! I googled to find out what happened and discovered that they really did alter the recipe. I will never ever buy this again. Seriously, I'd give it zero stars if I could. I'm not going to even bother trying the minestrone soup. Probably crap now too.
What did they do to my fav soup?
This has been my go to soup my whole life. I just cracked a can with great anticipation as it has been a while since I’ve had it. The off-putting smell hit me first. It was something akin to playdough. I heated it anyways hoping I was imaging things but nope…tastes just as bad as it smells. I thought it was either bad or a new recipe so I searched the web for clues and alas, they’ve gone and fixed something that was never broken. I will never, ever buy this again.
They Ruined this Soup!
I never do this but I actually wrote to the company to express my disgust at what they've done to this once fine product which I've been buying for 35 years... they've added so much water you can actually count the peas. Their response to me was that they were basically doing this to satisfy their customers! What a joke! I used to love this soup now I have stopped buying it and have told my friends what it's like now and they agree. As someone else here said it is just 'gruel' now-- shame on them and I hope sales drop off.
Swill! Never buy it again.
I just wrote to Campbell's telling them what I thought of their new "recipe". That is, add more water, lots more water, and remove almost all of the peas. That will probably save them like two cents a can.
I had no idea Campbell's bought out Habitant, they've ruined it beyond repair. It's tasteless crud now, worse than gruel.
A great quick meal!
I heard a lot of good things about this pea soup before trying it myself. This soup made by Habitant since 1918 is a classic among Canadian families and kept its ingredients list very minimalist (water, yellow peas, lard, salt, onion powder and spice). The soup is nice, creamy and thick and offers great nutrition facts, especially with the high fiber (8g; 32% daily value) and protein (8gr) amount in the soup.
I received this complimentary product in exchange for my honest review.
Remove "French Canadian" from the label
What a joke. This is truly NOT traditional French Canadian pea soup. Now that Habitant products were bought out by Campbell's USA, they have ruined the once renowned pea soup product. Absolutely disgusting, not fit to be sold. Extreme watery and omg where are the peas. Tastes so damn blah, you've lost our family of over 50 years of eating this soup. Not fit for a dog.
Shame on you.
P.S. you might as remove the word pea from the label. There were so few in this watery blah garbage.
Sadly, this soup is horrible
Our family has eaten Habitant pea soup for over 60 years. We ordered some and when I opened the can it was pale in color and watery. There is no flavor to speak of, though maybe watery corn starch. I thought it was a bad can but the second can was just the same - awful. It appears Campbells bought Habitant and changed the recipe. They should be ashamed for putting out a product that tastes nothing like Habitant, and in fact tastes like nothing at all.
