After sewing since I was a teen, I did without a serger for years, but now that i have one, particularly because I like to sew with knits, I can't imagine what I did without it. A basic unit, generally works well. It can be a giant pain to thread, and occasionally I use the napkin hem which means taking out one needle and 1 thread and it takes FOREVER to rethread it when I'm done. But in spite of that, I just love how easily it finishes edges and makes it that much easier to tidy up the insides of your projects.
