#14 in Books

Description

Publisher's description:
We follow Sayuri from her childhood in an impoverished fishing village, where in 1929, she is sold to a representative of a geisha house, who is drawn by the child's unusual blue-grey eyes. From there she is taken to Gion, the pleasure district of Kyoto. She is nine years old. In the years that follow, as she works to pay back the price of her purchase, Sayuri will be schooled in music and dance, learn to apply the geisha''s elaborate makeup, wear elaborate kimono, and care for a coiffure so fragile that it requires a special pillow. She will also acquire a magnanimous tutor and a venomous rival. Surviving the intrigues of her trade and the upheavals of war, the resourceful Sayuri is a romantic heroine on the order of Jane Eyre and Scarlett O'Hara.

Read this book awhile back and loved it! Beautifully written story, I went through this book in a matter of days. Its one of those books that you just can't put down once you pick it up. I haven't seen the movie but I would like to even though I'm sure it will pale in comparison. Books turned into movies never live up to my expectations!

After years of watching the movie over and over, I finally caved a week ago and read this book. The Japanese culture is mesmerizing. This was a fantastic glimpse into what geishas and even people went through back in the early years of the 1900's. Mameha is by far my favorite character in both the movie and the books. I enjoyed the book but I prefer the movie. At the end of the movie, they cut it short and you are left with thinking Sayuri and the Chairman are happy. In the book, it doesn't seem like they really are all that happy years later. Don't get me wrong. Movie was very well made and book was well written. It's just one of those stories that anyone will love. I recommend it!

I love this book. Every couple of years I will reread it. Such a touching story. Watched the movie which was visually stunning, but enjoyed the book much more.

What an emotional journey! I felt so sad reading the hardships that this woman endured. She is such a survivor and I can't imagine how she was able to survive both mentally and physically. It was tragic and the triumph of the human spirit.

I read this ages ago, therefore I do not remember the story fully, but I do remember reading this book and really enjoying it. However I was eleven when I read that book, and I'm not sure that was such a good decision on my part due to the fact that some of the content really made me uncomfortable at that age. However, despite my uncomfortableness while reading it, it was a very good read and fully recommend it.

Memoirs of a Geisha tells the story of Chiyo Sakumoto who is sold as a young girl into slavery to a geisha house. She goes on to become an extremely successful geisha named Nitta Sayuri. Life in the beginning is not easy ... taken from her family, she is treated horribly by the people with whom she is sent to live with ....in particular by another geisha named Hatsumommo. The book is narrated by Sayuri and its easy to forget that this is not an auto-biography ... rather a fictional but factually correct account of her life. Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha and the effects of World War II not only on the geisha trade but on Japan as a whole. We also follow Sayuri as she pines for the love and affection of one man.

SUCH an excellent book and highly recommended! Rich with detail about the customs and rituals of the geisha world.

A beautifully written book that I have gone back to time and time again. Strong, passionately written characters and a wonderfully constructed storyline. Complex plot and character development. It's hard to put down.
