#14 in Books

Description

Publisher's description:
We follow Sayuri from her childhood in an impoverished fishing village, where in 1929, she is sold to a representative of a geisha house, who is drawn by the child's unusual blue-grey eyes. From there she is taken to Gion, the pleasure district of Kyoto. She is nine years old. In the years that follow, as she works to pay back the price of her purchase, Sayuri will be schooled in music and dance, learn to apply the geisha''s elaborate makeup, wear elaborate kimono, and care for a coiffure so fragile that it requires a special pillow. She will also acquire a magnanimous tutor and a venomous rival. Surviving the intrigues of her trade and the upheavals of war, the resourceful Sayuri is a romantic heroine on the order of Jane Eyre and Scarlett O'Hara.

I loved this book. I couldn't put the book down and I ended up looking like a panda for a couple of days from staying up too late. The story was very moving and you can't help but feel sympathy for the girl. The book progressed in a nice pace and the main character was well developed. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a more mature chick lit. The only reason I didn't give this a 5-star rating because for some bizarre reason, I have no desire to read it again anytime soon (I re-read my books a lot) but I'm sure I'll pick it up again someday. This book is worth every penny I spent on it and I proudly display it on my bookshelf.

This is one of my all time favourite books. I read it before I saw the movie and am glad I did because the book was so much better. If you've only seen the movie I highly suggest you read the book because it is so much more beautiful. This book was able to bring tears to my eyes. A must read for everyone!

I read this a couple of years ago, before it was made into a movie. I just loved it! The author had to of done a lot of research for this novel to make it so great. There is a lot of detail and history in it. Normally I'm not that big on history, but Arthur Golden does such a great job painting a picture and a time period that I didn't even notice. Everyone that I have talked to that has read this book has loved it. I can't wait to see what he will write next.

This is one of my favourite books. It's so romantic and beautifully written, a MUST read! I recommended this book to a few friends and they all loved it! What is suprising and amazing is how Arthur Golden writes so convincingly in first person about the life of a geisha. Read it, you won't be disappointed!
