My very first impression .... "wow, this is toooooo sweet!" When I'm expecting a bitter dark chocolate and then am greeted w/ sweetness on the level of a milk chocolate, it is alarming. I didn't mind the sweetness, but felt it was a bit too pronounced for a bar that is DARK chocolate. This bar will most likely not sit well w/ dark chocolate lovers.
After I got used to the sweetness and began to expect it, I settled into its flavor. It reminded me a lot of a slightly bitter Toblerone! A big plus for me, the caramel pieces did not get stuck in my teeth like Toberlone's crunchies often do.
While I can't say that I'd ever purchase this bar, I will admit that it was my favourite of the line. But then, I tend to be a bit of a chocolate snob. I will say that if I were to recommend a bar to someone who was looking for a less pricey alternative (at least, I assume the price point would be lower) to a Dagoba, Green and Black's, or, better yet, a bar turned out by an artisanal chocolatier who makes their products by hand, this would be the one.
I was surprised by the quality of the chocolate base. Coming from a mass market confection company, I was expecting something much more waxy and chemical tasting. The chocolate used in this bar, and the other mix-in bars in the line, was a pleasant surprise.
I feel like the caramel bits were of an excellent size, and liked that they weren't dumped into the bar in a quantity that would overwhelm the taste of the chocolate.
I've had better, but I've also had much, much, much worse.
This bar is pretty okay.
I was disappointed in this chocolate bar. Oh, the dark chocolate was very delicious and I liked the little crunchies in the bar, but I could not tell that there was caramel in it! I was chewing the chocolate and was crunching the crunchies, but could not taste any caramel. That was the part that let me down.
Finally I decided to let the chocolate melt in my mouth and "collect" all the crunchies on my tongue and chew them when the chocolate was gone - THEN I tasted caramel. In Nestle's defense, it is rather good, and a fun thing to do, when you melt it on the top of your mouth and then chew a random crunchie in between your front teeth. It's like they gave you something "to do" with the bar.
I just expected to taste more caramel flavor in the chocolate when biting into it. I thought that was the point of the bar (as stated in the description) which "marries smooth dark chocolate made with 64% cocoa solids, with pieces of crunchy caramel to deliver a balanced combination of bitter and sweet taste." Again, I would not turn this down if offered to me but I would not purchase it myself.
Unlike the other Noir bars, I found this one a little too sweet and probably wouldnt get this again. I have never been a huge fan of Caramel so you probably should take that with a grain of salt. I just found this bar a little too typical and a little too sweet. Don't get me wrong, I still ate the whole thing, but It wouldnt be my first choice from the Noir line
