Oral B Electric Toothbrush with Artificial Intelligence
I have a very old, single speed Oral B electric toothbrush and I know it needs upgrading. When I received my new Oral B Genius X toothbrush I was very excited. The box looks very modern and definitely an improvement to my current toothbrush.
The box includes the toothbrush in a very nice cardboard enclosure with an Oral B rotating brush head, a white and very cool looking travel case, 2 instruction booklets and 2 charging cables. The toothbrush is white, with a pretty rose gold front, an on/off button, a selection button and 5 icons which represent the different brushing modes. My first impression was very positive.
After using the toothbrush for a couple of weeks these are my personal views and opinions:
Pros:
The toothbrush has a very nice, modern design and look. It is very sleek and the grip is very soft and easy to hold. The different colour LED light is a nice touch but I don't think it is really necessary, although it is very handy when it goes read to indicate you are applying too much pressure. The 6 different modes are nice once you get used to them and you have given them a bit of a try to feel the difference on each one. The button to change brushing modes is very useful as well as the battery charging indicator on the front. The travel case is fabulous to keep your toothbrush safe in the cupboard or take it on a trip. It is a little big but it fits the handle and 2 brush heads so it is very handy. There is an Oral B 1 extra year warranty leaflet in the box which was great but unfortunately, when I went to register the toothbrush it was not listed on the available products so I don't know whether it has registered properly.
Cons:
The toothbrush is really noisy and unless you close the bathroom door you can hear it in the room next door. The toothbrush is mean to vibrate every time you need to brush in a different area but as it is so noisy and I was also paying attention to the app I missed it a couple of times. It takes a little bit to get used to the vibration but once you get the hang of it it's actually good. The two charger cables included have 2 EU pins so I had to find a transformer, luckily I had one in the house. The instruction manual has very little useful information and hardly anything about each of the brushing modes, so I hoped the app would tell me more information about them.
The app:
I was in two minds about the app, on the one had I didn't think you would need one to brush your teeth but on the other hand I was intrigued to make the most of the toothbrush's AI and to see if I could improve my brushing technique. The app offers you different brushing journeys to coach you and give you a goal to work towards. It is sometimes fun to follow the app to see where you are brushing, whether you are applying too much pressure and the coverage of your brushing but I did not like that once I had chosen the whitening dental journey it blocked some of the brushing modes and I could not use them unless I exited the journey completely. The app does not explain the different brushing modes and what they are for and can get a bit confusing with all the modes and information it shows. I found that it took me much longer to brush my teeth using the app than with my old toothbrush as I was paying too much attention to the phone so in the end I only used it at night since I am always rushing in the morning to leave the house for work. Overall, the app was fun (sometimes) at the beginning but once the novelty wore off I stopped using it and just focused on using the toothbrush and its different modes without the phone to guide me.
In conclusion, there is a lot of potential in this toothbrush but it takes a while to explore the different brushing modes to see which one suits you best and which you prefer to use, so it can take a bit of time to experiment. The brush feels more powerful than my old toothbrush, which is good, but it's definitely noisier too. After trying the different modes I quite like the Sensitive and Clean White modes, which is an improvement to my one-speed old toothbrush. My teeth feel really clean and look great too.
The app can be fun if you like coaching apps and you like the competitiveness of setting personal goals or achieving rewards but otherwise it can get a bit in the way and after the novelty of using it a few days I lost interest. Overall I like the design of the toothbrush and how clean my teeth are after using it for just 2 weeks but I find it noisy and I have lost interest in the app, which is a selling point of the toothbrush so I guess I will be happy just using the different brushing modes at my own pace. I would recommend it if you want a modern electric toothbrush and you are into apps to follow your progress and set up virtual goals for yourself.
