I am not a fan of this diaper genie. We have another model that we prefer over this one. This one is a little annoying to empty. Because of the design and the way it opens up, diapers seem to get stuck quite often. The top also comes off all the time which means the smell isn't contained properly. The latch that you open to empty it doesn't seem to completely close and also seems to let some smell out.
Although it has its flaws, I'm glad I purchased this years ago. It really cuts down on the smell of dirty diapers which is a great thing. The unit itself is cheap but unfortunately the refills aren't. I've found a single cartridge lasts about a month if you wrap the diapers up as tight as possible. That makes a world of difference in how often you have to change the bag.
The downside to this unit is that you have to push the diaper down through the top. If the diaper is quite full you run the risk of the contents coming out and getting on your hand. I always make sure the diaper is as sealed as possible to avoid this. When the bag gets too full it becomes harder to push the diapers through the chute. This is when you run the biggest risk of getting stuff on your hand. It's better to empty the canister before this point.
Emptying the canister is probably the worst part of the diaper genie. All those diapers smell and you have to open the bag to seal it for removal. Holding your breath helps as does moving quickly.
I still think this is a better solution than having dirty diapers in regular garbage cans or having to double bag them.
I've been through three of them in the past 2 years . they break so easily and the refills are extremely expensive.
I bought one of these to keep at our home when our grandsons are visiting or staying the night. The refills are so expensive and it got to where there was a funky odor. I just used a regular plastic grocery bag instead.
Garbage, if you get it as a gift, return it and buy the elite. I'll talk about the elite on it's page but truly without a foot pedal this is completely useless and more hassle than any other option you may have for disposing of diapers.
But it hides the smell, so it is effective. Just the biggest hassle ever.
I received the Diaper Genie 2 for free and I would most definitely not spend the money on it. I'm actually looking to get another kind that has a foot peddle that we got bags for from my baby shower.
They say you can operate this with one hand, but good luck not getting a mess on your hand while having to forcefully push this through the hole at the top. It would be so much easier to just have a foot peddle and be able to drop the dirty diaper in.
I also don't like how you have to cut the bag away or the way the pail itself opens halfway down the pail. I like Munchkin's design better with the door on the front.
its a very great garbagge fron the diapers of yours baby i like this product!!!
Loved my diaper genie and used it for both kids. Keeps the smell trapped and diapers out of sight. Able to use it with only one hand which is great! I even had my 3 year old putting his own diapers and pull ups in, I thought it would be great for encouraging toilet training but alas he thought it was great fun. I completely recommend this product!
I agree with the other mom out there that said it was a waste. For new moms, all these thrifty little gadgets sound great and very inventive but as you become more experienced you find work arounds that save you so much money! I got a diaper genie for my first child and thought it was amazing, well until the lid start closing oddly. Finally I gave up and decided for my second child (tada!) I was just going to get some bags or go green and reuse the plastic ones from grocery shopping and double bag them and it did just as well. Trust me, this product is okay but really takes advantage of first time moms and their jitters to want the best.
