Dog won't eat the new formula!!

Our lab was on the original Salmon formula for 5 years, beautiful coat, well formed stool, vet said it was amazing for her! Then we couldn't find it at any stores in our area, staff knew nothing, it was a disaster, we tried many other foods, no go! found a similar product our girl would eat at triple the price, but hey, what can you do!! Then Superstore got it back in new package and sizing!! Our lab would NOT EAT IT!! Switched her to lamb formula, same thing!! Superstore was great at taking back full bags, but what a hassle!! We were not pleased they messed with the formula, and something in the line up of dry foods is an ABSOLUTE no go for our sweet lab!

    New look, nearly identical formula

Regarding the comment below, the packaging has changed.. as well as bag size and price.. but it looks like the ingredients are nearly identical. At least the first 8 to 10 ingredients anyway.

I agree that the Superstore should have posted signage regarding the change, and informed their employees of what was happening! Dogs, and cats, are family to us - but they need to be on a consistent diet. This grain free salmon formula is what our dog needs- a single source protein, just fish and no additional chicken or egg or other protein source. Hard to find at the same value anywhere else.. and so convenient to pick up while we are getting groceries.

Looks like the 7kg bag is costing only a few dollars less than the 9kg bag did, but for now we are sticking with it.

PC Nutrition First Salmon and Potato and Grain Free

Be warned that I called 7 Zehrs stores (Kitchener Waterloo Region) and this product is listed as "DNO" (Do Not Order). The grocery folks in each store, stated that means that either the packaging is going to change or the product is discontinued. A package change, usually means a formula change. Non of the employees I spoke to, were provided with any value-added information, from Loblaws head office or the PC Brand folks.

We are now switching to a somewhat close match (WholeHearted), which is a Grain Free Salmon from Canadian Tire. Dog Food Advisor, gives WholeHearted 4 stars. The PC Grain Free Salmon and Potato was 5 stars. I thought the price/Kg was comparable, but after purchasing the new food, I found out we need to feed our 60 lb Golden Doodle, 3.75 cups vs the 2.75 cups for the PC product (you do the math).

What's unfortunate, is that it is recommended to transition a dog, to a new food, over 7-10 days. We only have 3 days of food left of the PC. We kept thinking the PC was just back ordered (Covid, etc.) There was nothing on the shelf, at all 7 stores in our area, to let anyone know that the PC food was being discontinued. Apparently, there is a small "DNO" with the price on the shelf. It would have been nice to put up a piece of paper, stating the product is discontinued. The big corporation (Loblaws and PC brands), wouldn't probably have read their own PC Nutrition First package, that actually states the 7-10 days, or recommended transition time. It would have required experience and thinking outside the box (get the drift that I am upset).

    Updated On: September 08, 2020

Update as of Sept 8, 2020:
The new formula for this product is now on the shelves. As I suspected (and hoped wouldn't happen), this is a President's Choice, chess move, to reduce the cost of the product, which equates to a lower quality food. No drop in price...

The old Ingredients formula, started as follows:
Salmon, Salmon Meal, Menhaden Fish Meal, Potato Meal, etc. At this point, when you go down the chain of ingredients, the ones that follow have lessor value. Dogs, need protein, all the other ingredients, play minor roles (according to DogFoodAdvisor.com)

The NEW Ingredients formula, starts as follows:
Salmon, Salmon Meal, Potato Meal, Menhaden Fish Meal, Whitefish Meal, etc.

So, what took place is that Menhaden Fish Meal was moved down the line behind Potato Meal. In other words, the protein was given a back seat to Potatoes!

Potatoes, have very little value to dogs, as it is protein that they need.

I suspect, if the new formula was transparent on the President's Choice website (I could not find a picture of the ingredients, online, so I had to take one from a package in the store), Dog Food Advisor would be able to do a new rating, and then probably lower the score of this product offering.

I'm left to feel that again, we are faced with "buyer beware" scenario, at the expense of our family pet. A couple of years ago, Loblaws Corp. (owner of the PC brand, and several retail grocery store brands), admitted to participation in a price fixing scheme, involving bread and bread products. This appears to be another move to pull one over on the consumer, if you will.

In the end, our Golden Doodle didn't seem to like the Canadian Tire food (odd as he has a veracious appetite), so we now have put him on Blue Buffalo's Wilderness line of, Grain Free, Large Breed, Salmon. Dog Food Advisor, gives it their top 5 star rating.

President's Choice (Loblaws brands of stores), has lost us, permanently as pet food customers.

My 2 Golden Doodles Love This Food

My 2 doodles, almost 13 years old, and a year and a half love this food. Previosuly was feeding them ORIJEN SIX FISH, which is a great food also, but twice the cost. Would hate to reference it like this, but both dogs poop is formed, easy to pick up, and isn't awful smelling! I mean, poop is poop, but you can tell a good food by what the dog is eliminating.

Great product! This review if for the senior variation.

My dog is very sensitive to foods, over the past few years we had to feed him grain free food. It is very expensive, so doing research we found this senior option and he loves it! The ingredients are great and they come in a few soft variations which he loves and look very appetizing !

Would be nice to have another senior flavor just to switch it up!

Your pet is like another member in your family and like your family you want to feed them something healthy too. This dog food has all good ingredients, affordable and a resealable bag. A+.

My Chocolate lab girl loved this food for a long time, then she got sick of it haha ! But i would recommend this brand! We bought the Grain Free kind, and the ingredients list is pretty good! It's smaller pieces too, which my dog liked. Price isn't awful either. Will probably get my girl back on this if she ever gets sick of the new food she's on lol

I started buying President's Choice Nutrition First Salmon and Potato grain free blend for my dogs when my chocolate lab started having tummy issues. It wasn't so much that it was grain free, it was more because the ingredient list is fantastic. I did a ton of research before choosing which food and this particular kibble is way better than many brands from pet stores. And a much better price!

This is the main brand of dry dog food we purchase for our dog, because despite it not being a typical high end brand, it still has the same qualities. The ingredients are great and I like that you can get a grain free version - plus the dog loves it so it's a win win!

This is a great product. My dog eats the grain free salmon and potato dog food and loves it! I was paying almost $100 for a 12 kg bag of almost the exact same dog food. Only paid $50 for 9kg
