This book is a great start to a great series. The world is fascinating and the magic is interesting, and with great characters and an important goal to reach this book

The Abhorsen is an interesting character, and it was great seeing Sabriel learn how to truly become one. Mogget was a great character, as well. Touchstone was also an interesting character to follow, and although his guilt was annoying at times, his redeeming qualities did make up for it. However, this combination of characters allowed for a great read and the adventure was all the more enjoyable because of the dynamics between them.

The ending was great as well (both the last chapter and the epilogue), providing a beautiful finish to a great story. While it isn't necessary to read this book before the other two (as I had the first time around), it does provide interesting back story for the following books. More things are explained here than in the other books, and the importance of the Abhorsen is shown more so, as well. This series is definitely worth reading - if not for the fantasy setting and magic system, then for the characters who are worth caring for.
