Hooks are not strong enough to hold it

While I do give out 2 star reviews, it’s seldom I give out a 1 star. Because my guide for a one-star is ‘I hated it’. Usually, even if I dislike a product, it’s still useful or could work for somebody. So, for me, a 1 star means the product is beyond redemption or very bad in some way.

This shelf smashed that criteria by breaking as I was putting it up. Initially I was impressed, it seems good quality (though a little smaller than expected) and comes with two little hanging hooks to hang extra stuff on. When peeling off the wrapper and feeling how sticky the backing was, I actually thought ‘wow’ this might work and not fall down like they always down. My hopes were quickly dashed.

I realised I had stuck the backing on upside down. Well, no worries, it’s reusable so I just peel it up, right? As I was peeling it up the hooks that hold the shelf to the back popped off of the backing. I was shocked to see they were attached only by flimsy glue. I pulled the second hook, gently with my fingers and it too, threw itself off the backing.

So while, yes, I believe the sticky backing could hold 30lbs of weight, the product will not hold up over time. At all. The reason for this is that when you’re making a product that must hold, you have to look at the points of stress. The points it could fail are one, the attached hooks, which hold the metal shelving onto the sticky back and two, the sticky back attaching to the tile. The first point is the hooks. If they are not strong enough or held on well enough, they will break before the backing even becomes an issue. That’s exactly what happened in this case.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone could hang it for a few days, but it will eventually break on those hooks. I guess there’s a small chance I received a faulty one, but they really were just held on by cheap glue. They need to be held on by a glue that is thick, ultra-strong and can handle micro-movements and bends. Heck, maybe even sew them on, but it’d be better than this.

So now I’m left with a metal shelf I can’t hang and a warning. DO NOT buy this.
