My mother in-law gave me this book to read and loved it as much as she does; she treasures it almost like it’s a part of her own family history. The Donnelley Must Die gives you a full account of the Donnelly family from the time they arrived in Canada from Ireland in 1840 right up until their deaths. James and Johannah Donnelly settled in a pioneer community near London Ontario and for the next 30 years their activities gained them wide spread notoriety in the area and not for the good! They had seven sons and one daughter that worked their land, got into fights with the other locales, James was put in jail and convicted of murder but escaped the gallows. Johannah trained all of her sons to be dirty fighters. They put their thumbs in others eye’s, knee others in the groin all was fair to them as long as they came out the winner. Their sons all grew up to be handsome reckless, enterprising in business and very dangerous in combat. This book is fascinating if you enjoy crime biography. The story of the Black Donnelly’s has been heavily mythologized and a lot of rumours have bin built up around the story, but no one will ever forget the murderous events that DID occur at the Donnelly farm house near the real town of Lucan Ontario in 1870’s. The real grave site can still be seen and tours of the sites mentioned in the book are available to anyone that is interested in this wild family history. The book The Donnelly’s Must Die will take you on a journey of bloodlust, unbending loyalties and fatal revenge. Its one of the best reads I have ever experienced and if you enjoy real crime novels you will definitely enjoy The Donnelly’s Must Die.
