Amazingly wonderful, but extremely sad.
I love reading books. I love being taken away to the lands in the books.
I am an emotional person, so when I cry reading a book, I know it is an amazing book.
I will be keeping this book on my shelf for years to come. I make a point to read the book before watching the movie, and as usual this book didn't disappoint.
a keeper
I rarely keep my books, usually I read them once and pass them on. This one will stay on my book shelf. At first I was unsure if I would enjoy it. But as i got a couple chapters in I found I couldn't put it down.
This is the story of Liesel Meminger, a 9-year-old girl orphaned before the war and brought up as a foster child in Munich. Liesel first comes to the attention of Death (our narrator), when he comes to take her younger brother, Werner. He witnesses her stealing her first book at her brother's burial. Liesel has a desperate desire to read but does not know how. She steals the book because she understands the value of the words. Her kindly stepfather Hans Hubermann uses that book to teach her to read. She falls in love with words and reading becomes an obsession. During this time, Hitler uses HIS words to gain power. Germany becomes a dangerous place and the people live in constant fear.
WOW! What a different approach. Beautifully written! The imagery, the dialogue, the characters ......this book is a gem! I laughed, my heart ached, I cried. This book deserves a place among the best. Recommended!
An absolutely beautiful book that brings a different viewpoint to the many stories of the Holocaust. The juxtaposition of the vibrant young protagonist and the ugly war waging on in the background provides readers with a thought provoking story that will leave you thinking about it after the book is finished.
This is one of my favourite books! The writer's style so beautiful and it pulled me in from the very beginning and I couldn't put the book down. I had borrowed it from someone and then had to have my own copy so that I could re-read it.
A classic novel that I read a while back when I was younger. The plot was riveting, and as a history geek, I loved that this was set back then, and also included themes that was relevant during that time. A chilling and riveting story.
