The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Reviews
#1 in Books

Description

Publisher's Description:
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

I do not usually enjoy or read sci-fi stuff. HOwever this series captured my attention right away. The characters were great and the story line kept you engaged. Great read, not just for teens.

I borrowed this book (and the series) from a friend, and had to go out and buy it after I read it.

I started to read it after 11pm and was done at 3am - I could not put it down. It's been a long time since a book has captivated me the way this one has. I would recommend it to anyone.

One thing - I thought it would be much more graphic and disturbing (given the concept of a game that includes kids killing each other) but I didn't find it disturbing at all - and would therefore recommend it to young teens as well.

I know this book has become wildly crazy because of the popularity of the movie, but I knew it from long before the movie this would become a global success. The first book really is the best of the series and its original premise, constant action, and compelling main and supporting characters keeps you on your seat from beginning to end. The book is really that much more exciting than the movie. The idea of showing what young adults would do when provoked to fight for their life is truly an amazing, eye opening lesson, learned from similar titles like Lord of the Flies and Battle Royale.

Honestly, don't judge this book by the movie. It's a solid book with an original plot line. Suzanne's writing is nice to read. A great book to take to the beach if you haven't already read it.

I'm not going to lie and say I was one of those people that could tell they would instantly love this book. I had heard about it but it just didn't seem like it would be my cup of tea. I kept putting it off until I was the only one at work who hadn't read it. So I borrowed the trilogy from a co-worker and over the course of 1 week, I was done reading all of them. I couldn't believe how fascinating and well written they were. I highly recommend this to anyone that loves a good book. If you've seen the movie, read the book.... it's better :)
