I read the description for this online and thought it sounded great. One of my favourite films of all time is "Moon", which was very much about isolation out in space, so I figured this book would be right up my alley.
This is an excellent story of isolation and survival. I'm no science buff, but everything in this novel is explained clearly, even for someone unfamiliar with the different processes discussed. This made it easy to understand what was going on without feeling condescended to, which I feel would have compromised both the story and the writing.
The greatest asset this book has is the fact that Mark is such a likeable character. I was rooting for him the entire way through, cheering at his successes and gasping at his failures. There's some really great gallows humour in here to break through the tension, but the climax will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat!
If you're a sci-fi fan, this is a must read. It's a great book.
This book is simply amazing. I saw the movie first, and now i'm reading the book. Damm its good. Its science fiction, of course it wont appeal to eveybody. But it is so realistic, so well written, so captivating, everybody would love it! The main caracter is wonderfull and has an amazing sense of humour. I can't tell how many times i laughed out loud in the bus because of this book! Plus its very short, and the science is explained in a very simple way. Perfect book for the summer!!
I am obessed with this book! I first watched the movie with Matt Damon and was super intriged when I heard it was a book. It is definitely a funny read but also gives alot of interesting facts about NASA and science.
The Martian gives solitary confinement a new meaning. There is drama, hope, sadness and fear and really is a broad spectrum of emotion. I really felt for him and wanted him to succeed and was really rooting for him.
I loved this book as much as the movie, for many of the same reasons and a few different ones. The book itself is such an easy read. The main character really speaks to you, and dumbs down the science stuff but doesn't make you feel like an idiot. More importantly, Weir makes a really engaging character that grabs your attention and stops you from putting the book down. I also like how straight to the point Weir writes. He doesn't drag things out unnecessarily, which might seem difficult when writing about someone stranded on a planet, completely alone. This is a fantastic book, a great, humourous take on science fiction that almost sounds plausible. It's really easy to get lost in. Wonderful!
Very good movie, don't want to spoil anything.
Only complaint is that its a little on the long side.
The Martian is a great new science fiction novel by Andy Weir, now being made into a motion picture starring Matt Damon. It is an inspiring story about human ingenuity and survival that will make it nearly impossible to put down! I highly recommend reading it BEFORE watching the film (which I am highly anticipating).
