Description

A New York Times Bestseller

A decade after the publication of this hugely popular international bestseller, Picador releases the tenth anniversary edition of The Red Tent.

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that tell of her father, Jacob, and his twelve sons.

Told in Dinah's voice, Anita Diamant imagines the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood--the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of the mothers--Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah--the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through childhood, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past.

Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's lives.

This was an amazing novel that I still continue to pick up every so often just to enjoy again. It tells the story of Rachel (from the bible - daughter of Jacob) and it is NOT a religious novel by any means. It is a "what if" type story about how things must have been during that time for women - or how things could have been.

It really is a great novel and I highly recommend giving it a chance.
It might just become one of your favourites as well :-)

SORRY made an error - Rachel was the mother I believe the daughter is Dinah.

This is my absolute favourite book! I could read this book from front to back over and over and over again. Its about a girl Named Dinah from the bible (I know what lots of you are thinking right now... 'a bible character? this book must be so boring'). But this book is absolutely amazing. its about Dinah, and how her mother and aunties lived in a very patriarchal society and how they bonded together as women to make themselves stronger.its very touching. It has everything you want in a book. Drama, love, mother and children, rules and how one person overcame them. oh, i just cant say how good this book is, you just have to read it for yourselves!!!
