    Fun times

I was unsure how this would go over given some of the reviews. I wanted it for an 18 y.o. daughter who would feel excluded from many of the other TP decks because she wasn't alive for the "recent" events. I was looking for a version that would level the field for everyone. The older decks were too hard for her and decks like the Disney deck were too easy. It took us a little bit to get used to the new rules, but they help as levelers, too, because there are ways to earn pie pieces without answering the question correctly. It seems like it would have a shorter play time than TP usually runs, so that might appeal to some people, too. (It helps to think of it as a brand new trivia game and to get TP out of your head.) On the new cards, there's a category that is read aloud and the player whose turn it is has the option to answer a question from the category or to throw the question out to the group (stump.) Once we understood that aspect, the play got much more straightforward. The end result: she's happy with the game and it served the purpose I wanted.

We love playing board games but the Original version of Trivial Pursuit is now 35 years old and we wanted to try something newer. Because of the success of the first edition, all the newer Trivial Pursuit editions are expensive - unbelievably so - and hard to find. All I really wanted was an updated set of cards; we've been playing with the same board since the 80s and it's still in great shape. I settled for the 2000s version because it was the only one I could find that wasn't over $100.
The questions are great but the game play is ridiculous. I imagine it has been re-imagined for today's audience - the old game used to take an hour or two, this version is over in about 20 minutes. The gameplay is convoluted and there is so much unnecessary stuff added. After a few games, we got the hang of it but later resorted to just using the new questions with the old board - pretty much what we wanted all along. I give the new cards a rating of 5 but the but the newer gameplay is only about a 3; some of the new features are fun but mostly it's just restyled for short attention spans.
