Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella Reviews
#995 in Books

Description

Publisher's description:

When the spirit of Lara's great-aunt Sadie-a feisty, demanding girl with firm ideas about fashion, love, and the right way to dance-mysteriously appears, she has one last request: Lara must find a missing necklace that had been in Sadie's possession for more than seventy-five years, and Sadie cannot rest without it. Lara, on the other hand, has a number of ongoing distractions. Her best friend and business partner has run off to Goa, her start-up company is floundering, and she's just been dumped by the "perfect" man.

Sadie, however, could care less.

Lara and Sadie make a hilarious sparring duo, and at first it seems as though they have nothing in common. But as the mission to find Sadie's necklace leads to intrigue and a new romance for Lara, these very different "twenties" girls learn some surprising truths from each other along the way.

I am a huge Sophie Kinsella fan and I have read all of her novels. But this one was a huge letdown! I was very excited to read this, and I bought it as soon as it came out. It just was not as great as her other novels, and definitely not what I was used to reading from her. If you have not read any of her books yet, don't make this your first one. It is an average read, and definitely not the one to get the best first impression of Sophie Kinsella.

I really liked this book! It's a departure from the Shopaholic series, but still classic Kinsella in her funny little ways of conveying character emotion and rationalization. Almost for that reason alone, I would recommend it - I started to feel near the middle the Shopaholic series that it was too much of a good thing.

What I loved about this book was the underlying message about how we think of our elders. For me, this was more than a nice light beach read; it was definitely thought-provoking. When I think of Kinsella's other works, I didn't really get that same feeling - I read for entertainment only. I really enjoyed the window into the '20s and the quirky friendship between Sadie and Lara.

    I definitely recommend this book!

First off, i am generally not a fan of chicklit books. I like a good mystery suspense when reading but picked this book up at the urging of a friend. I have to say that the beginning of the book didn't have me sold but as i got into it the dialogue picked up and the story entralled me. I have to say that i am now picking up other Sophie Kinsella books to read because she is a genius storyteller. Great, feel-good book!

Another great book from Sophie Kinsella. It took a bit to get really sucked in but as usual, her characters won me over. The book overall was endearing and as always, amusing! I love the interactions between Sadie and Lara.

At the funeral of her 105 year old great aunt Sadie, Lara Lington meets her ghost. Her very persistent annoying 23 year old ghost. Sadie is anxious to find her necklace and needs Lara's help to track it down. In the process the two predictably form a friendship and uncover a great mystery.

Though it took me awhile to get into this book, in the end I did like it. I've read every one of Sophie Kinsella's novels and am a big fan of her writing style. I initially found the ghost quite annoying to the point where I didn't really enjoy the first part of the book, but as it went on I started to get sucked into the story. It is cute, clever and funny. It made me think about how we treat the elderly and what interesting stories they have to share.

What I like about Kinsella's writing style is the tone. It's always funny, quirky and very... British. I feel like I can see and hear the characters, and they feel authentic.

This is an easy beach read and I look forward to her next book!
