We’re starting to gather up equipment for our future cottage lot – and living off the grid with solar panel powered lighting is extremely important for us.

These lights, although not aesthetically perfect and pretty, are purely functional and do what they are meant to do!

They are triangle shaped plastic lights that will hold up in most weather without damage(hail and major windstorms might cause some damage).

The solar panel is located at the top of the light fixture, and there is an on/off switch on the lower part of the panel where the light is. As long as it has enough sunlight during the day, it should hold enough charge for about 10 to 12 hours of total lighting time.

The switch is covered with thick rubber, and is waterproof with minimal effort required to actually press the button.

Once it is set to on, it just needs to power up throughout the day, and can last most of the night – this is especially important in dark areas, outhouses, sheds, etc. where you want to see where you are going or as a safety feature. When dusk hits, the light sensor goes off, and the lights go on! The light is dim until you actually walk near it – then it is in bright mode for about 30-40 seconds, resuming back into dim mode once the movement is gone.

If it is installed in an area with light, it will not turn on – it has to be set up in a relatively dark area. In other words, it won’t exert energy if there is already enough lighting.

It’s easy to install and includes the hardware – it’s okay quality, so we just used our own hardware as we tend to over engineer all of our projects!

Overall, it is currently working in our backyard, and gives a good light off when we let the dogs out at 9pm, leaving a dim light that brights up every once in a while to make way for the neighbourhood cats. For the security lighting itself, it is worth it and less than a monthly alarm system!
