Books Reviews

Curling up with a good book is a favourite year-round pursuit: in front of a blazing fire in January, in the park under a warm May sun, in a hammock lake-side in July or with coffee on the back porch overlooking brilliant fall foliage.

ChickAdvisor members love light reads like the wildly popular Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella or the more introspective romances of Emily GiffinHe's Not That Into You gives us food for thought, and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series is a guilty little pleasure.

The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney

I was very excited to read this book as I saw it on many a must read book lists, and had read many raving reviews for the book. That being said I was very disappointed with this novel. Without giving too much away about the plot, the story is about a set of siblings who come off...

This is the first book in the Katie Chandler series. This is by far one of my most favourite romantic urban fantasy novels. I tell people that it's like the chick lit version of Harry Potter and even friends who don't love Harry Potter or this genre of novels have fallen in love...
The Brick Bible: The Complete Set

1 review

I've been reading The Brick Bible for years online. It was only once it showed up in my local bookstore that I knew I needed it. It was an impulse buy and I almost returned it one or twice because I knew it would be the type of thing I'd display in my living room and never...

F U, Penguin: Telling Cute Animals What's What

A great book for not only seeing pictures of adorable fluffy, cuddly animals, but reading Matthew Gasteier's cutting yet hilarious takedowns. If you're the friend with the sense of humour, who insults your nearest and dearest with hilarious cutting (but never meanhearted) jibes...

Dance of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin

1 review

I was disappointed with the sequel to the Masque of the Red Death; I almost rated this three stars as it wasn't too bad throughout (until I really got into writing this review), but the ending itself deserved a star knocked off. I couldn't help but get the feeling that this was...
The Mysteries of Udulpho by Ann Radcliffe

What a dreadfully painful read. It was long-winded, as many books from that period were, but worse so in that there was so much of the book that could have been omitted. It was grand without being epic, and there was nothing keeping me from putting down the book and giving up...
