They do their job I don't think I've ever found a manual toothbrush that doesn`t. It does it job of keeping your teeth healthy and clean. The bristles are soft until you have the brush for a long time obviously

The ultra soft version of this toothbrush is the only kind I use now. It is great if you tend to brush your teeth with a lot of force and need softer bristles so you don't over do it on your gums.
