Great restaurant. the food was great as was the atmosphere. Expensive but great to go once in a while.
Unbelievable. We sat at the Chef's rail and watched Chef John Horne and his team meticulously craft each dish. We had the Summerlicious menu, which was far and away the best prixe fixe meal I've ever had. Iced Watermelon and Heirloom Tomato soup, Roasted Chicken Supreme on a bed of wheat berries and mushrooms (tasted like a creamy risotto), and a basil and coconut infused Nanaimo bar that blew me away.
One of my dinner companions is friends with Horne so we got to sample a few extras like the lemon foam to cleanse the palate (could have been my dessert) and a starter of sweet and juicy scallops on a plate of greens with edible flowers.
We enjoyed the Ontario wine pairings with each course and at the end, though we were all about to go into a food coma, sampled the cheese platter with lavender infused honey served with Horne's Great-Grandmother's secret biscuit recipe. Impeccable from start to finish.
The view at Canoe is unparalleled, between the sunset, the bustling city and the expanse of Lake Ontario. I loved sitting at the Chef's rail and watching the staff in action. White hats bobbed in a row as they carefully selected the best greens, egg yolks and garnishes for each dish, plating them carefully just so.
The kitchen, which I got a tour of at the end, is immaculate. They washed it down and swept it twice in the couple of hours we were there.
I highly recommend Canoe. Be prepared to be wowed.
