92% OF CHICKS DIG IT
So I went and had my first cut and colour at Civello (after reading reviews for it on Chick Advisor, of course!) I was getting a really drastic cut (about 6 or 7 inches off) and I first went in for a consult with a stylist and colourist. I showed them the example picture I had, and they told me how they would cut it and what would work with my hair etc.....The consultation was free, and I made my appointment and left feeling pretty good about the cut. I went back the next day and Mia (the stylist I'd consulted with) got to work. She didn't talk that much about anything except what she was doing with my hair (she kept me very informed throughout, and before she put my hair in the ponytail and cut it off, she asked me if I was sure, and if I was okay which I thought was considerate.) Anyway, i was glad she wasn't too chatty because I often feel that hairdresser/client chat can sometimes be forced and really awkward. It's fine once you've seen them a few times and have a relationship, but for the first time, it's awkard if they just ask you a million questions about your life. Mia was very careful about the cutting, and did a really good job with the layers and blow dry/flat ironing - it looked just like the picture I had brought in.
Colleen did my highlights, and she was also very good. I had never had highlights before, and I wanted to make sure they were subtle, but that it actually made a difference in my hair colour. I got exactly what I wanted, and I found that Colleen was really friendly, genuine and easy to talk to.
In terms of the price, it was way more than I ever pay to have my hair done, but I knew that going in. Because it was such a drastic cut, and my first time with highlights, I wanted to make sure I had quality people working with my hair and I definitely received professional, high quality treatment. Also, an extra bonus was that they gave me a gift card for $10.00 off my next service because I was a first time client. All in all a very good experience at Civello - I would certainly recommend it, especially if you're getting a totally new style and/or colour.
I've been getting my hair cut with Tailor at Civello Queen for the past 2 years and she does a great job everytime.
My hair is a bit strange, really curly but the bottom layer is more straight with a bit of wave. I've gone to a bunch of other stylists who didn't take the time to get to know my hair and ended up with horrible hair cuts (curly part up around my ears, straighter bits down around my shoulders - not good!). Tailor usually cuts my hair dry so it looks great dry and really works with my curls.
I met up with my expecting cousin this past Tuesday because she wanted me to be there for some hair support. She's been wanting bangs for a realllly long time and decided this was it. The ambiance is great and the girls at the front greeted me right away. The stylist that cut my cousin's hair was Jason and he was so super nice. My cousin asked me my opinion on what she should do and Jason was actually open to hearing what I had to say, but I of course added that he is the hair stylist and will know way more than me. I hate stepping on anyone's toes especially since I'm a make-up artist and get a lot of customers that think they know better. I asked him if he thought anyone would be free to do a brow waxing and he recommended Tara right away! I checked to see if they had an opening with her and with my luck they did. I had let my brows grow in so much it had lost its shape.
Tara was really nice and asked me each time she ripped my hair off if I was ok. I thought she was very knowledgeable and professional. She definitely deserves the following she has. The only thing that kind of annoyed me is that she asked me my age because she assumed I was in high school or something. I know I look young and Tara's not the first one that's asked me that. It just bugs me because if I was a woman that looked older would she still have asked me my age? Just because I look young what gives people the balls to ask someone's age especially a woman because a woman never tells lol. I do most of the time though just so I can see the shock on people's faces. At least it gives me hope for when I'm 40!
After my cousin's hair was beautified (Jason decided because my cousin has a cowlick bangs would not work for her), he offered a free make-up touch-up using Aveda's make-up line (prior to having her hair done she got a head and shoulder massage!). He was really sweet and answered all my questions in regards to what his favourite product was, what spring colours he would recommend for her and if there were any other products he would recommend from the line. I must say, he's pretty damn good with applying and blending make-up with a sponge and q-tip! They don't use brushes for sanitary reasons (MAC does but we make sure we always clean our brushes!). My cousin was tempted to buy the lavender scented liquid gel he used on her hair and I was tempted to buy the smoothing serum (forgot name), but we thought we'd test it out and see how our hair held up in the rain storm that was coming our way.
I'd definitely go back because the prices are decent (junior stylist is $40, manicure is $30) and it's still a trendy salon/spa. I also love the location because I usually spend a lot of time on Queen St. I also love Aveda hair products so you can't go wrong with that. The staff all seemed nice and professional.
While I haven't had my hair cut at Civello on Queen, I do use the brow waxing services of Tara (resident brow artiste) on a regular basis. She takes the time to study your brow and facial structure, and customizes your brow to suit you. Tara's super-friendly and great at what she does. The wax used at the salon is very gentle and doesn't require cloth strips, so you'll never experience the level of pain, soreness or redness that you might get at other salons. If you're in the market for a new brow design, I highly recommend an appointment with Tara. Brow design is $25, and brow maintenance is $15. Note that brow maintenance is only applicable when service is rendered within 2.5 weeks after your initial booking; otherwise, it's the full design fee.
