An item was priced at $500. I had an old ring that I brought in to trade that they valued at $60. So I gave them the ring and payed the remaining $440 on my debit card.
The person I bought it for didn't like it and so I tried to return it. They repeatedly refused to give me $500 in store credit, saying I was only entitled to $440. The owner was belligerent and insisted that I didn't 'understand' the situation.
After half an hour of arguing and drawing diagrams to explain it etc... he finally conceded and gave me a slip of paper with the $500 credit. He then decided against this and was trying to get the paper back from me, and saying he would make a note to NOT honor the slip of paper! I told him I wanted my money back, because at this point I was disgusted with the situation, and was willing to take the $440 refund and leave. He refused. I told him he was being a 'prick,' at which point he called security and had me escorted from the store (a first for me in 32 years of being alive).
I recently had a family heirloom ring resized there. Service was quick (it was done that afternoon) and the diamonds have never looked this sparkly. I actually wondered if it was the same ring (or if the stones had been replaced with sparkly CZs!!!). The location is deceptive - looks a bit ghetto but apparently Tiffany sends people there when they're too busy to handle the work.
Marquis Jewelers (416) 964-7773 is located on 2 Bloor Street just west of Yonge/Bloor (enter the strip mall near Swarovsky and walk towards the back of the mall). Don't be put off by the cheesy decor and some of the jewelry on display, these people make amazing jewelry. They actually do most of the major repairs for Birks and in some cases make some of their pieces. I came here to get the diamonds on my wedding band tightened and I couldn't believe a: how reasonable it was ($25 - very cheap compared to Birks) and b: how incredible my ring looked after! They polish and buff all of their repairs and that lasts a long time. I also bought my ring cleaner here, again, cheaper and better quality than the jewelry sparkle from Birks. If you want to buy any type of jewelry or get something custom made, talk to the owner, Socrates. His prices are unbeatable and the quality is top-notch. This is a little secret most people don't know about but if you live in Toronto or are ever here for a visit and thinking about buying some jewelry, go here!
Since I wrote this review I have been back multiple times. My sister's engagement ring was made here and I've brought in gemstones I got from my Grandparents to have them set as earrings and a necklace. Socrates always does an impeccable job. It's no wonder they get business from Birks, Tiffanys and Gucci. He really knows his stuff. I'd recommend coming here if you want something custom made or repaired vs. spending more at the major chains I mentioned.
