70% OF CHICKS DIG IT
I have just started reviewing a lot of places online and I wanted to provide my opinion since it seems there's so much malice online, where as I had a great experience!
I was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple months ago and due to the nature of my growth, I unfortunately had to opt for chemotherapy. Getting a wig wasn't the first thing on my mind, but eventually once I started to look a little further into my future I realized I was going to lose some if not all my hair.
I hit google and started to look around the city for places that offered wigs, and something that would look natural as well. There aren't that many places in the city that offer wigs, so I took to visit Abantu, Eva and Company and lastly Mohair Beauty.
They offer free consultations for all kinds of hair loss, so I was able to go in on a Saturday with my husband and see what they had to offer. I was honestly, very scared -- this is not something in a million years I would've thought I would have to do, hunt around town for a wig.
I went in just prior to my treatment for my consultation and was a bit unsure at first as it seemed it was more of a salon that focused on hair extensions as opposed to wigs for older women. During the consultation, my consultant went over the differences between synthetic wigs, human hair wigs, custom human hair wigs and which would be best suited for me and my lifestyle. They have many synthetic wigs that are ready to go, and something that is human hair can be ordered as quickly as the following day. In terms of pricing, they range from $800 - $1500 and can last anywhere from a year to three years. (I'm still on my first couple months with it, so I'll have to report back with the life expectancy of it).
The consultant suggested I chose a style that was exactly what I had already, perhaps a little longer. Her reasoning behind this was comfort. If I have something that is what I'm used to already seeing, the transition would be less of a blow. She said the most important thing is to make sure that we can get a hair system that no one would be able to tell is a hair system. The human hair wigs have a hand tied portion so that it looks like it's actually growing out of your head. She was friendly, realistic and straight to the point, at my age that's all I'm looking for.
Since I had not done my treatment yet, we chose a style (I opted to go for human hair, because I'd still like to heat style it), worked out pricing and I took my package information with me until I was ready.
A few weeks later when I had my energy up and was sporting a bald look I came back in to order the style we had already chosen (they kept all my information on file). I had an appointment booked as soon as the following Tuesday and was very very nervous.
When I first laid eyes on my wig, I just couldn't imagine it on my head. They placed it on and the fit was snug but not too tight, straightened it out and started on the cut. They were able to match the exact cut that I had before, but suggested I keep it a bit longer. They worked off of a picture I had brought in and talked me through the whole appointment (they could probably tell I was a bit nervous). The appointment took about an hour and a half and they went over styling information and provided me sulphate free shampoo and conditioner samples. They also offer receipts to take to your insurance company for tax purposes.
We are part of a women's support group for those going through chemotherapy and there are about five of us now who have wigs from Mohair. Highly recommend!
Hello Laura Toplass (Urban Rush Producer),
**We have also provided a response on your YouTube video link.
Thank you for your feedback. As each process at the salon is custom (including colouring, installation and hair preparation) we are unable to provide a refund and this is made clear in policy at every consultation. It's similar to a bathing suit or intimate apparel store being unable to provide a refund. We had exhausted every possible solution as per your request and even suggested having the entire process redone free of charge, but unfortunately you declined.
We have been operating for ten years and have many happy customers who are quick and eager to share their experiences here, there's nothing that is an act about over ten years of excellent service . Also as a company that does not advertise, we work mostly off of client referrals.
Our head stylist is a skilled colour technician and has been doing colour for over fifteen years often working with blondes as well.
We encourage everyone to do their research all over town before they decide to settle on a place to have their hair extensions/hair restoration done. We also book our free consultations while other clients are in the salon so that people may have a chance to talk to current clients and ask about their process and experience.
It's unfortunate you felt you had a negative experience at the salon, but you are entitled to your opinion, regardless if it is hurtful or not.
Check the Better Business Bureau, they have an F rating!!!
I am a TV producer and I felt compelled to warn everyone looking to get hair extensions to do their homework on who are the best in town. Luckily "Is Salon" in Yaletown has some experts that can help make sure you don't make the same mistake I did. Here is a link to a segment I produced about how to pick what is right for your lifestyle and how you can avoid a horrible experience like mine. I strongly recommend Is Salon either Erin Moore or Liz Pederson will make sure you are looked after.

My Review:
I had a horrible at this place and felt mistreated by the owners sister/ office manager Fanta. Let's put it this way this is a women who doesn't think she's ever in the wrong even when I humbly was willing to share blame on what the original issue was. I asked for the extensions to be blended and my definition of blended is the colour is mixed well together and not large panels which is what I was given. I flagged this right away and the owner Yanie told me that its an easy fix and they can just add a few highlights to the darker panels of colour to blend them. The young girl who they got to do this over processed the hair and after 5 hours the first night and 2 hours the next day they still looked terrible. I had to get them taken out two days later when I was out of town. This cost me $100.
I asked for a refund... my trust in this company was not good... they refused but offered to do the extensions again. In the spirit of giving Mohair the benefit of the doubt I agreed but only clip ins. Smart move... this next set took two appointments and the colour while a nice match had a bunch of foil fold marks. Since they over sold me hair I was able to get a pony tail extension too... the quality of the hair is bad and frizzy... totally not wearable. Who wants to add horse hair to their head? Every time I brought this to their attention I was reminded that I changed the hair colour which in fact is not true, I asked for them to be more blended an instruction I gave at the time of consultation. This salon is not good at colour...in fact terrible and seem to think its okay to send their clients out with half ass job on the extensions. They do not understand customer service (even when they feed you how important it is to them they are telling you you are wrong... poor way to treat clients). They also do not understand that clients are the best walking advertisement they have.
I could go on and on about this... I was even told bleach washes out over time... as if its okay to send me out with extensions that has mistakes on them and hope they get better in time. Laughable.
DO NOT IGNORE MY POST... I hope that no one else has to go through what we went through... there is no excuse to treat people poorly, lie to them and rip them off.
I am sure a sweet as apple pie message from Yanie or Fanta will appear after this... its all an act people... I have tried to work this out with them coming on 3 months and countless hours to no resolve. They are not to be trusted with your hair!!!!!
I know they say a picture is worth 1000 words but here's another thousand to show how amazing Mohair is and what they've done for me! I always be grateful for how much they've changed my life. I highly reccomend Mohair Beauty Salon to anyone suffering from conditions which affects the growth of their hair, as well as if you want to look and feel beautiful!
Mohair Beauty is an excellent salon and their hair restoration work is absolutely phenomenal. No other salon in Vancouver, or in BC, offers the quality of product and workmanship they do. They are VERY AFFORDABLE and absolutely worth every penny. I've been to countless salons only to leave disappointed and broke. Mohair Beauty is the only salon I will ever trust my hair with. They are simply amazing at their hair restoration work and can really bring out the best you in! An absolutely wonderful Salon that everyone must come and try.
I have been a long time customer, and admirer, of Mohair Beauty and their work. Mohair has brought me out of the shadows of constant fear and turned me into the woman I've always wanted to be. The service here is just amazing! All staff are trained professionals who value confidentiality and are committed to making you not only look good, but feel good. They will always try to book appointments in a manner which is convenient for you and they'll follow-up with you to see how your hair is doing and if you're satisfied. Mohair is VERY affordable with top of the line quality products, they are understanding and open to helping clients with their hair needs without bias or judgement, and provide an excellent service as well as experience.
I've been suffering with Trichtillomania, its the urge to pull one's hair out. Its chronic and impossible to treat successfully. 11 years I've been pulling my hair out non-stop, I am COMPLETELY BALD with the exception of a thin hairline remaining. I am a young woman just entering my 20s from Surrey, hair is an important part of beauty for me, and I was just shattered to pieces knowing I'll never look the same. I've tried weaves, wigs, extensions, tracks, microlinks, everything to make me look pretty again—to make me look like me. But it was all so fake. Nothing I tried looked real on my head, until I found Mohair. Mohair changed my outlook on life and I'll never look back. All of the products and pieces I used before just reminded me of how bald I was. Nothing sat on my head correctly, the hair was bulky, tangled and purely frustrating—not to mention very expensive.
From Mohair Beauty, I have received their Free-Flow cap extensions. The beauty of this cap extension is that its sculpted to fit your own scalp shape and head size! This makes everything so much more comfortable and less noticeable, the hair moves so naturally with your head, it really feels like you're wearing nothing at all. The hair is threaded through the cap by individual strands, which gives me the chance to part my hair which ever way I like! You would imagine such natural and well structured work would be really expensive but its not even close! This is THE MOST AFFORDABLE beauty hair salon with THE BEST RESULTS! Mohair Beauty also gives you a FREE style with every visit; also, a FREE haircut and colour with your first extension set. Mohair Beauty offers the best selections of hair, using fine extra Russian virgin hair direct from the source (as in the hair is in a ponytail that was literally cut of the person's head). The only other supplier of this hair is another salon located in California.
At Mohair, I am saving more than $1000 a year. Like I mentioned before, I've tried everything. The years before entering Mohair Beauty, I spent about $10 000 total, trying to fix my problem as best as I could (this included but not limited to full head weaves, tracks, microlinks, wigs, extensions, and styling). Here's a cost breakdown of what I USED to spend:
- over $300, every 3 months, to have the whole head weave put back into my hair = $1200
- over $200, every 6 months, to buying hair = $400
Over $1600 I used to spend every year to maintain just "hair" on my head. Not including styling, extensions, re-tightening, or products to help maintain the look, and the "professionals" who affixed the hair continued to do a poor job, and lacked any creativity. This "hair" was wretched! It was dry, bulky, uncomfortable, and, most of all, it looked fake (I've included two pictures below of what the hair looked like before). Every hour the hair needed to be brushed and untangled (if I didn't do this it would look like some cat coughed up a hair ball). I was ready to break down, I was just paying for someone to tell me I looked sort of normal. I am forever grateful for what Mohair has provided for me.
Just the staff alone at Mohair Beauty Salon is amazing. They are comforting, encouraging, and do not mind spending more time on developing a look and feel that YOU really want. I was embarrassed before, I couldn't stand to look at myself, let alone another stranger; but at Mohair, they make you feel right at home and respect your privacy. They have polite knowledgeable staff who are always willing to satisfy and exceed your expectations.
Asides from their work ethic and always putting the client concerns first, what sets Mohair Beauty above all other competitors is their creativity and ingenuity. My scalp is bare. I have very little hair left, most of it remaining on the hairline (the very edge where the hair starts). It wasn't until coming to Mohair when I realized how lucky I was to even have this remaining hair. Mohair took advantage of these little bits of hair and seamlessly intertwined my hair pieces into something I've never experienced before. The wigs I had prior just sat on my head, but the wig Mohair Beauty gave me felt and looked like natural grown hair. They styled it in a manner which complimented my face and even did a french braid on the side for me (I've included a link to the photo below)!
They located SUPER close to the Waterfront Skytrain Station, only a 6 minute walk down Cordova Street and you're there!
With Mohair Beauty, the world needs to watch out for me! I enjoy life to the fullest and look forward to windy days where I can feel the wind blow through my hair. I've more than survived the waters, I swim with confidence! That dread of my hair falling off, I haven't felt that feeling in a loooonnnng time.
Mohair Beauty has made my life easier, more affordable and has just improved the overall quality of living. I am now a more self-confident and stronger person than ever. The hair they gave me is my hair. I look in the mirror, its my hair, not a wig. Thats how real it looks and feels! They gave me the opportunity to be me again!
so happy to see so many good reviews about Mohair Salon on this site. I would highly recommend them to anyone!! They totally saved me in a horrible situation I was in a few months back, and it seems to me from reading the reviews on this site that they have given everyone else the same treatment. Here is my story:
I used to get my extensions done by an independent supplier. I have been getting them done for just over a year now. The reason I started to get them done is because my hair is super thin, and I could never do anything with it. Every time I curled it, it would just go into these silly little ringlet's.. anyways, when I first started getting my extensions done by this girl, she was wonderful. Things went really wrong right before my wedding when she did a huge install of 6oz. I noticed right away that something was wrong with my hair as it was tangling at the back. Remy hair should never do this, no matter what anyone tells you. I let her know what was happening, and she informed me that she could not guarantee the quality of the hair, but that it was probably just some 'growing pains' so to speak and that it would be fine and everything would be ok for my wedding. Boy was she wrong!! I arrived in Mexico and my hair kept knotting worse and worse. I had paid for flight/hotel/etc for my hair stylist to come with me, and he was also very worried about what we were going to do come my Wedding day. Sure enough, the hair was horrible!! I was able to get a few pictures from the beginning of the wedding but the evening pictures were ruined because my hair actually started to DREADLOCK at the back of my head. It took 2 of my friends 2 hours to get these knots out the next day, and I saw and felt a lot of my own hair getting ripped out of my head. I messaged the girl to let her know what had happened, and was even more shocked to find out that she didn't care. She just kept telling me she didn't guarantee the quality of the hair and that I could of course buy more from her, but she was not willing to replace it for me. I was BEYOND upset to say the least. Here is where MOHAIR SALON come's in....
A friend of mine had referred me to them, and she called Fanta from her phone one afternoon so I could speak with them. I talked to Fanta who was very lovely and moved some appointments around the next day so that I could come in and have a consultation and see what they could do for me. When I arrived the next day, I was greeted by a smiling Fanta who went through all the different options for me. She spoke with me about what had happened, and even offered to give me their 50% off sale which had just ended. This was a huge help to me because I had already spent SO much money with the other nightmare girl. I knew my husband was probably going to kill me for getting more hair but since most of my hair had been ripped out by the other horrible extensions, I really didnt have much of a choice at this point. Besides, I was going to leave in less than a week for my honeymoon and there was no way I was going to have 3 weeks of honeymoon pictures ruined by me having bald spots and thin hair :(. I decided to go with 4oz of Russian hair. Fanta actually moved around appointments again for that week so that they could fit me in before I went on my honeymoon. I left SO happy!! What amazing service.
I came back in later that week and met with Yanni, who is the owner of Mohair and Fanta's older sister. I really like that this is a family business, and they are both such lovely people. You get a really good feeling when you are in the salon. I also like that they have the private area upstairs. I am ok with sitting in front of the mirror and window downstairs as I like to view the process but for those that don't, it's nice to see they have an option. Yanni was very gentle on me because my scalp was raw from my previous extensions, but she still was able to do a quick and amazing job. My hair looked amazing!! It really was the best hair I have ever received and certainly not the most expensive. She took her time to straighten my hair and then I decided I wanted it curly and she was happy to re-style it for me. I really like getting my hair done by Yanni. She is always smiling and laughing and is really just such a nice genuine person. The part I was the MOST happy to hear about is that they guarantee your hair!! If you are not happy, they will replace it for you. This is HUGE, and is just another reason why you should get your hair done by them.
On my honeymoon, I swam in salt water for 3 weeks, PLUS I stayed in a hotel for 5 nights in Gili Tragwan (Bali) where they didn't have fresh water in their shower..only salt water. If the hair was not of amazing quality there is no way it would have lasted. It is still the exact same length as when I got it installed at the end of May, and I have barely lost any to shedding. The colour is amazing and matches my hair perfectly!! This really is the best hair I have ever had.
I have been back for a tightening since. I met with Yanni this time as well and she again was nothing but amazing. I was even greeted with hugs from her and Fanta. I am SO thankful that I was referred to Mohair Salon and I would never think of going anywhere else to get my extensions done. Thank you Mohair Salon!!!
I first started looking into hair extensions 5 years ago. After many years of bleaching my hair blonde, (never again!) it was super damaged and just would not grow past my shoulders. I had always dreamed of having long, gorgeous hair and unfortunately was not born with it! At that time, Mohair had radio ads on the Beat and after a few failed attempts at glueing in my own extensions (don't ask..) I decided to call them and book an appointment. I have been hooked ever since! Over the past five years I have always found the quality of the hair to be awesome (no issues with matting or tangling) and the washing, styling and maintenance to be totally managable (just takes a bit longer, naturally)! I've also never met a single person who knew I had extensions without me telling them.
Price wise I think the hair and services are comparable and reasonable, especially for the quality of hair I have always received. When it comes to extensions, you get what you pay for. Everyone is different but to me, I feel more confident with my extensions and they make me happy so they are well worth the cost! Plus you wear them everyday so they are a great investment! ;) They also have half price sales which are a great opportunity to get quality hair at very affordable prices.
My experience at the salon has always been awesome. The girls there are so fun and hillarious! I always look forward to my appointments. I've always recommended Mohair Studio to my friends and to anyone else looking to get extensions.
I am 28 yr old woman who is a kidney recipient and take anti rejection meds... with that being said my already hair has thinned out much more than it was due to because of the meds! I got married last December 2011 and that is when I started going to the wonderful girls at Mohair-as I was looking for a non invasive/chemical/glue solution to my hair loss problem! I say they are wonderful because they accommodated my budget, gave me fantastic looking full head of head and not to mention they are all very very nice!!!
I would not hesitate to recommend anyone to Mohair for hair extensions or pieces! I feel beautiful with my hair and my husband and friends love it too... I think I may be a lifer ; ) I originally just wanted them in for the wedding and honeymoon trip 6 months later, but I'm kind of hooked now. Btw... I even went swimming with the turtle in salt water with my piece and extensions! Both myself and the hair survived! ; )
The quality of product is great, hair and product as well as service. As for tightening, I usually go every 1.5-2 months and the cost is very comparable to if you would have to get a cut and color every month (which you won't) If you are wondering, you can still wear your hair in a low pony tail or a low up do-very versatile.
If you are thinking about getting hair extensions, please just go to Mohair. You will feel so much more confident and so glad that you did it!
In response to Kay T, I would imagine some of the women or men who go to Mohair would like to remain anonymous because they do not want people to know they have extensions in... I don't mind using my name because if I can convince anyone that was feeling like I was feeling before extensions to get them... I know what a difference it will make for them!
I love my hair! Thanks girls! :D
No suspicion require Kay T, also no maliciousness required. Writing anonymously in a review can be just as *reputable* as writing a fake name. No? Your review is very telling as you ask me, as it is not very informative. If the hair was so expensive ... why purchase?
I'm a middle aged woman who has experienced the beginnings of female pattern baldness and I've been going to Mohair for 5 years now. The girls there have changed hands a couple times, but it has always been consistent service. I've always been very specific with what look I wanted, colour and cut. They've always successfully delivered, and any time there have been little snags, they've been fixed up in no time. They are also very good at advising what would be the best for my hair and scalp, in terms of weight/type of hair I should use or eventually switch to.
If I've had any little repairs they'd fix them up and don't even charge for it, everything is relatively straight forward.
I roughly have to purchase new hair every year and a half, or just at Boxing Day.
No complaints here, but if I do have any, you ladies will be the first to hear it!
-Wendy D.
I am highly suspicious of the 5 star review from "anonymous". If you think they are so great why not reveal your name? My experience was much like the other reviews on here...bad hair, bad service, high price. Enough said.
Mohair has been an amazing experience. They are a high-end salon that does an exceptional job of extensions. They are professional, and super nice. They have been such a pleasure to work with. With extensions there are always going to be little things to get used to and Mohair has never blamed anything on me (not sure that other review is the truth).
They host a semi-annual sale where all of their extension services (including the hair) go 50 percent off. Making hair extensions very affordable!
I can't say enough good things about this salon. Would highly recommend it to anyone!
