After receiving a gift certificate for Onyx we were a little worried that there would be nothing for us to eat (we are both vegetarians). After looking on their website we saw that they at least had a pasta dish. We were also informed that if you call ahead to make reservations, to let them know that we are vegetarian.

We were told to call ahead and let them know we were vegetarian and they said that the chef would whip something up. I'm not normally one to just leave things to chance, so I just assumed I'd take the pasta dish and not risk it. At least I'd know what I was getting.

Upon arriving, the overall ambiance is very sheik and upper class. I would have never guessed this place was right on Spring Garden Road, as it's right underneath a Mexicala Rosa's! On any other day I would have walked on by.

Our server was fantastic. Right on the ball, friendly, and helpful to boot. She ran through the special menu that was prepared for us (because we called ahead) and is sounded so good, we both ordered it. We were not disappointed. The food was stupendous. Yes, stupendous. The presentation, the flavours, the creativity - everything was just fantastic. Usually when you go out in Nova Scotia, you're vegetarian options are at best nachos, veggie burgers or salad if you're lucky. The chef really outdid herself with her creations. We were told that it was going to be part of the new menu, and that we were the guinea pigs. Best taste test ever!

It was an expensive night out (or would have been without the gift certificate) but we'll be back for sure! We don't usually go out, and we don't usually go higher-end when we do go out, but I have a feeling we'll make an exception for Onyx.

If you're a vegetarian, don't be afraid to call ahead to a restaurant and ask what your options are. You may be surprised.
